๐Ÿชถ There was a time when our dances were forbidden, our ceremonies criminalized, and our songs were meant to be silenced.

In 1883, the United States government began enforcing policies that punished Native people for practicing certain traditional dances and ceremonies. Our relatives faced imprisonment, withheld rations, and persecution simply for continuing their ways of life.

But they kept dancing. They kept singing. They kept our traditions alive.

๐ŸŒŽ Today, every drumbeat, every song, every dance, and every gathering is a celebration of that perseverance.

What was once punished is now proudly celebrated. What they tried to silence continues to echo across our Nations.

This Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ Day, we honor those who carried our traditions forward and the generations who will continue them.

At Sky-Eagle Collection, we celebrate the beauty, strength, and diversity of Indigenous cultures around the world.

โœŠ๐Ÿฝ We are still here. Still singing. Still dancing. Still celebrating!

Happy Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ Day! โค๏ธ

CORPORATE TOKENISM.

One Indigenous voice does not represent every Nation, community, designer or cultural authority.

๐Ÿชถ Visibility is not shared power.
๐Ÿชถ Representation is not consent.
๐Ÿชถ Collaboration is not equitable if Indigenous people are still left outside the opportunity.

The fashion industry can do better.

Indigenous Peoples are not a checkbox.

Itโ€™s official. ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿชถ

๐ŸชถThe International Indigenous Fashion Council has been approved as an ad hoc observer to the World Intellectual Property Organizationโ€™s Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore.

๐ŸชถThe World Intellectual Property Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations, and this committee works directly on issues that matter to Indigenous fashion, including traditional knowledge, traditional cultural expressions, intellectual property, and the protection of Indigenous creativity.

๐ŸชถFor the International Indigenous Fashion Council, this is about much more than attending meetings.

๐ŸชถIt creates a formal pathway for Indigenous fashion perspectives to be present in international discussions about cultural protection, knowledge, consent, ownership, and benefit sharing.

๐ŸชถThis milestone also strengthens the path forward for the International Indigenous Fashion Accord, an Indigenous-led framework being developed to advance stronger standards around cultural authority, consent, intellectual property, fair benefit sharing, ethical collaboration, and the protection of Indigenous creativity across the global fashion industry.

๐ŸชถAs this work grows, we plan to send official International Indigenous Fashion Council delegations and designated representatives to relevant international forums to present our work, contribute Indigenous fashion expertise, build international relationships, and advocate for Indigenous designers, makers, knowledge holders, and communities.

๐ŸชถFrom the runway to international policy, Indigenous fashion belongs in every room where decisions about our creativity are being made.

๐Ÿ”ฅAnd now we have another room.

We are deeply grateful for this milestone and ready for the work ahead. ๐Ÿชถ๐ŸŒŽ

Tokenism and extraction can look surprisingly polished in fashion.

Indigenous people can be visible in a campaign, runway, collaboration, or advisory role while the real value still flows somewhere else.

In fashion, a collaboration can still be extractive even when Indigenous people are visible

So ask:

๐Ÿชถ Who designed the work?

๐Ÿชถ Who supplied the materials?

๐Ÿชถ Who got paid?

๐Ÿชถ Who owns the final product and the story around it?

๐Ÿชถ Who benefits after the campaign, runway, or collection is over?

Maybe it is wool or alpaca sourced from Indigenous communities in Peru.

Maybe it is plant fibers, dyes, or knowledge connected to Indigenous communities in rainforest regions.

Maybe it is a designer, artisan, model, or consultant whose presence gives a project credibility and value.

Growth matters. Business matters. Collaboration matters.

But one Indigenous person cannot speak for everyone, and Indigenous presence should never become a convenient way to legitimize a project that mainly serves corporate interests.

๐Ÿ”ฅTokenism is about appearance without real power or benefit.

๐Ÿ”ฅExtraction is what happens when the value is taken and the benefit stays somewhere else.

The fashion industry needs to understand the difference.

Indigenous fashion has made major progress in visibility and representation.

Now we need to talk about the business.

Not every Fashion Week or runway serves the same purpose. Some are cultural, some editorial, some consumer-facing, and some are built around industry and buyers.

If the goal is business growth, we should be asking who is actually in the room.

Are there buyers? Retailers? Showrooms? Real pathways to wholesale and long-term growth?

Representation got us on the runway.

Now letโ€™s build the business.

A recent video reposted by Fashionista shows @cfda CFDA CEO Steven Kolb physically restraining a @peta PETA protester during a fashion show, including placing his hand over the protesterโ€™s mouth.

At the International Indigenous Fashion Council we must speak up and against this issue. It is unacceptable and violence is never an answer!

๐Ÿชถ
People can disagree with PETA. They can disagree with protest tactics. They can disagree about fur, materials, activism, or how demonstrations happen inside fashion spaces.

That is not the issue.

๐Ÿชถ
The issue is what happens when disagreement becomes physical.
๐Ÿ”ฅ
Leaders of major fashion institutions carry a responsibility to model restraint, professionalism, and appropriate responses even in tense situations. Security, event protocols, and lawful removal procedures exist for a reason.
๐Ÿ”ฅ
The International Indigenous Fashion Council does not condone violence or physical intimidation as a response to protest or disagreement.
๐Ÿ”ฅ
Fashion needs difficult conversations. It also needs leadership capable of having them without putting hands on people.

Reposting from @fashionista_com

The footage involving CFDA @cfda President and CEO Steven Kolb and a PETA @peta protester raises an important issue for our industry.

Violence is never the answer.

People have the right to disagree. Organizations have the right to establish rules for their events. Protesters may challenge institutions, and institutions may respond to disruptions. But physical force, restraint, intimidation, or putting hands on another person should never become the answer to disagreement.

Fashion organizations and industry leaders carry an even greater responsibility to model professional conduct and ensure that difficult situations are handled through established safety protocols and appropriate personnel.

We can disagree with a protest.
We can disagree with an organization.
We can disagree with one another.

But disagreement should never become physical.

The International Indigenous Fashion Council does not condone violence, threats, intimidation, harassment, or retaliation from any side.

Accountability and peaceful dissent can exist in the same space.

We have to do better as an industry.
