What an absolute privilege to work on a project as meaningful as People Of The West. I attended the screening at the San Diego Film Festival at the UTC AMC Theatres in La Jolla, CA. This was my first time seeing myself on the big screen! AMC Theaters is a venue where I have always watched movies (Godzilla Minus One). Never would I have thought I would see myself at this capacity. I’ve seen the good and bad photos of me. Enough about that! To represent my Indigenous community and the tribes of California, what an honour. I felt like that little Rez kid from Beʼekʼid Baa Ahoodzání (Pinon) and Chʼíńlį́ (Chinle) Arizona can be so proud of this moment. It was possible Shimá sání (Grandma). I miss you and know you would have been so proud of your yázhí. You were always by my side. Yéego 🪶🪶🪶🪶

I did my own hair and make up. I also styled myself. You know what products I used. ☺️🤭✨

🪶 There was a time when our dances were forbidden, our ceremonies criminalized, and our songs were meant to be silenced.

In 1883, the United States government began enforcing policies that punished Native people for practicing certain traditional dances and ceremonies. Our relatives faced imprisonment, withheld rations, and persecution simply for continuing their ways of life.

But they kept dancing. They kept singing. They kept our traditions alive.

🌎 Today, every drumbeat, every song, every dance, and every gathering is a celebration of that perseverance.

What was once punished is now proudly celebrated. What they tried to silence continues to echo across our Nations.

This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor those who carried our traditions forward and the generations who will continue them.

At Sky-Eagle Collection, we celebrate the beauty, strength, and diversity of Indigenous cultures around the world.
