Take the ILDS Movement for Safe Skin into your community.

Dermatologists and dermatology organisations have an important role to play in helping people make informed choices about their skin health.

That’s why we’ve created practical #MovementForSafeSkin resources that ILDS Member Societies, dermatologists, healthcare providers and partners can use to start conversations, share trusted information and raise awareness of harmful skin-lightening practices in their own communities.

Use the campaign in your networks. Share the graphics with your members. Bring the messages into your outreach and education.

Together, our global dermatology community can help the Movement reach further.

A major milestone for the Skin Observatory study: the primary outcomes paper was published in JAMA Dermatology in August 2026.

The paper presents findings from the Global Access to Skin Health Observatory Study, a partnership between ILDS and L'Oréal Dermatological Beauty, drawing on data from 158 countries representing 97% of the world's population and providing the most comprehensive assessment to date of access to dermatological care worldwide.

Published in one of the world's leading dermatology journals, the study reveals significant disparities in access to services, specialist care and dermatology training. The findings provide a robust evidence base to support informed policy, workforce and health system decisions, helping to identify where action is needed most to strengthen skin health care globally.

This publication marks an important milestone for the Skin Observatory study, transforming global insights into peer-reviewed evidence that can help drive progress towards more equitable access to skin health care worldwide. 🌍

📍 Where you live can have a profound impact on your access to skin health care.

The Global Access to Skin Health Observatory Study highlights significant disparities in the dermatology workforce worldwide. In Africa, there are just 0.26 dermatologists per 100,000 people, compared with 6.0 per 100,000 in Europe.

Understanding these workforce gaps is essential to improving access to timely diagnosis, treatment and care for people living with skin diseases.

"Through time he improved, and the most important thing is he regained hope."

In this moving video Dr Bisaya Mohammed Abubecker, a dermatologist from Eastern Ethiopia, recounts the story of a patient who travelled more than 100 kilometres for treatment of a severe skin condition. Challenges with transport costs and access to follow-up care led to repeated disease flare-ups and profound psychological distress.

His story reminds us that access to skin health care is about more than treatment alone. It requires compassionate, continuous care that patients can actually reach.

The Global Access to Skin Observatory Study is helping to build a clearer picture of the barriers people face in accessing skin health services worldwide, while highlighting the challenges that prevent people from receiving the care they need. By documenting these experiences, the study aims to support action towards more equitable, accessible skin health care, so that no one is left behind.

When skin health is overlooked in policy, access to diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care can be limited, leaving millions without the support they need.

The Skin Observatory Study is helping to build a clearer picture of the barriers people face in accessing skin health services worldwide, while highlighting opportunities to strengthen policies and improve equitable access to care.
