The origins of the evangelical political connection to abortion was also about race, which was also about power.

We can't get lost in the weeds of blaming the media for the spread of information, and fueling issues.
Everyone is responsible for themselves and their actions - we do not operate as robots, and we all have free will.

Once again, last night, my family was harassed by a woman in our neighborhood. She has harassed my son three times, twice in the last year...the last time threatening to call the police. Last night, while walking our dog, she came for me, demanding that I answer her questions, refusing to drive away until I 'complied'. I was prepared for this battle - because I have to be.

The details of the story do not matter as much as the familiarity of the plot: a yt woman in a self-perceived position of power, angry that she cannot control my actions or that of my family, invokes her weapon, "I'm going to the call the police!" I stand firmly, look her in the eye and say, "Call them." In fact, I called them and she did not get her way.

My neighbors came out to show support and one of the officers who arrived apologized that I was made to endure this and they both advised us as to our next legal options. THAT is community policing, not the weaponizing of systems for the sake of power.

Last night, again for my family, the weapon of choice was law enforcement, but it really can and has been any organized group or system - education, prisons, religious organizations, etc. Prior to this interaction, I had taken time to educate myself on the options available under the law and had made my own connections within my city. That knowledge gave me power. The difference between her and I, was that I was not trying to abuse it or take hers away. I write this in the wake of the Baltimore shooting - ten lives lost and many more tragically altered because of the fear of the loss self-perceived power. Do your own research, know what you believe and why. Know what others believe and the real why. And engage in the good fight on your own front porch, it's those battles too that are necessary to win the war. taken in Fort Lauderdale, Florida by @illuminating_hope

I have spent a lot of time attending to the needs of this precious little angel. The little girl whose environment taught her early on that the way to find ‘love’ and ‘affection’ was to be who others needed her to be.

To do what others thought were praiseworthy.

These were her avenues to having access to the ‘love’ her little soul so desperately needed.
What every child would need - unconditional love, acceptance, positive attention, ability to make mistakes without fear of criticism.
She sought imitations of this type of love, resources, through being hypervigilant to the needs of others,
—finding ways to show up for them, never for herself, in exchange to feel some sort of ‘love’ and attention,
even if it was conditional,
and especially at the expense of developing her own identity.

So yes, I have been attending to the needs of this little girl.

I keep a photo of this precious little girl as the background on my laptop.

I never want to forget to attend to her daily.

For the 40 years, that she was given little to no individualized attention, I will prioritize unselfishly spending time to check on her, love on her
and daily acknowledge her needs, celebrating her innate identity.

She is curious, insightful, pensive, creative and desired to be carefree and I am going to let her be all of these things today and every day moving forward.
——
Who is the little version of you that needs the time and attention they deserved?

I’d love to get to know them - please feel free to DM me your little you and I will hold him or her in the same space where little Joycy gets to be free to be who she was always created to be.

Art is Regulating.

Had the pleasure of attending the grand opening of our city’s new art exhibit in our museum’s new location.

It’s within walking distance, so I look forward to many chances to pop in, sit and regulate as needed.

Grateful for communities and community leaders who prioritize creating opportunities to address the needs of their residents beyond the tangible.

Turns out your nervous system doesn’t always need a plan. Sometimes it needs a gallery.

People pleasers and recovering people pleasers this one’s for you!!

When we think about not wanting to rock the boat we need to pause and consider whose boat we’re referring to ➡️➡️➡️

For those conditioned to please above all else, this tends to be the boat of others or a collective boat that may disregard your needs as their swept under the desires of louder voices.

Consider pausing to ask yourself, “Whose boat am I rocking?” when you come to this fork in the road of decision making - it may be time to learn to reposition yourself in the fleet! ✌🏾

Check In!!! 📝

What do your boundaries reveal?

A boundary may not change who someone is—but it can change how they choose to show up in relationship with you. Sometimes, the adjustment is enough. And both may be fine.

Let’s stop playing with our symptoms & pay attention to the hail marys being sent your way!

Your homie has been trying to get you right, waving her flags 🚩 & now she’s resorted to panic attacks to get your attention?! 🫠
We do not want that - right?!

It’s time to tell your inner homie “fall back soldier” “I’m paying attention, getting curious & finding help”

We’ve got this!! 💪🏾👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿

You don’t have to generate hope from scratch on the days that feel unbearable.

Hope is a communal practice, not an individual test of strength. When your own capacity runs dry, let someone else hold the line for you.

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. If you or someone you care about needs a steady hand:

• Call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (free, confidential, 24/7)
• Text HOME to 741741 for the Crisis Text Line

• Take the smallest possible next step. You don’t have to solve tomorrow today.

Grateful reflecting on last month’s week in Martha’s Vineyard to celebrate another trip around the sun. 🎂

It’s a gift that my birthday also collides with the annual pilgrimage towards collective Black joy.

We gather to bask in friendships, new and old, to casually and intentionally make connections.

And just to be.

In family. In laughter. In art galleries. In movie previews.. In beach days. In farmers’ markets. In birthday butterflies. In rejuvenating shared moments. In looking around and realizing just how good it feels to be surrounded by us.

And my favorite part, the shared experience of ease.

Whether you fly in or ferry over, all the pretenses fade away the moment you step onto the island…for many even enroute.

No performing. No explaining. No shrinking. No carrying what doesn’t belong to me.

It’s how I’ve lived these last few years and I love the way it feels on me.

At home, these days, when I run into people I haven’t seen in years, I’m greeted with comments of surprise, wanting to know what I’ve been up to as they reflect the observance of the lightness and joy I embody inside…

My sister coined it perfectly for me the other day.

“Mhmmm, it’s the look of the unbothered.” 😌

There is something powerful about us making room for pleasure, rest, beauty, connection, and ease.

Not just on vacation, but daily.

So yes, I celebrated my birthday again in Martha’s Vineyard.
But I also celebrated joy. ease. belonging.

And I intend to carry all three again into this next year. 🤎✨
