OHPEN : It’s been fun recording these for y’all, for whoever’s watching, for whoever’s down to transmute, full videos on the tube : and the links in my bio. I want our people to watch these because they aren’t just for me. It’s a reminder that we can provide this kinda guidance for ourselves too. I’ve been singing to myself since I was a kid, and so allowing the practice to meld with the others that’re currently occupying my existence feels…good…real good…mmm.

SPIRIT LEAVES ROOM FOR THE CRASH OUT : AND IM GETTING A MIC : but stay cause I’m spittin. No bee was harmed in the making of this, we had a talk afterwards. Fate is a web that ties us back to Source, which is why I’m weary of a cord cut. And at the same time, there are moments you gotta do the “wrong thing,” the “impolite thing” to get back on track. Perfectionism is colonialism, not I. Not I.

IM READING IN BETWEEN THE LINES : YEAH! : oh the unsaid, that’s the gurl you gotta lookout for. When paired with the unseen, it could really rattle a neurodivergent brain. Self-regulation is so important. Like I can take a pause and breathe, I don’t have to keep pushing myself. I am safe. You are safe, even if you can’t clock how : did I use it right? I find power sexy, and while that’s true in some ways, confusing power for domination and control has resulted in me relinquishing my own agency to others as a signifier of worth. It feels silly admitting this here, but the process of recentering my own autonomy throughout multiple areas in my life has encouraged me to acknowledge the powerful women, femmes, and folk around and within me who aren’t expecting me to shrink. It’s helping me establish more reliable boundaries (even if it takes a minute) : i wasn’t born to be a punching bag : I’m not a wallflower either : I’m a lot stronger than I give myself credit for : like most things, how we treat others is an extension of how we treat ourselves : some of the most powerful people in this world not-so-deeply inside are the most tortured : the following poem contends with this perspective : and how quickly one can go from holding the knife to being slit.

Do I really want attention? I’ve been wondering whether the body is ever what it’s supposed to is. My body has a stallion’s worth of fish, fundamentals sketched and hyphened for whoever is listening. Hard swallowing the truth is a beast I’m leaving behind, since I’m no longer ashamed of my throat. Cause, at this point, we’re all learning, all fallible, all shining, micromacroaggressions mic’d. Some are expected to carry mountains of misunderstanding, while others are grown enough to know what running sounds feels tastes like. Figuring out what’s generative and what’s projection, sharpening one’s discernment, is a useful skill when divide and conquer exists. Right now, I wanna sing songs with, watch movies with, write with, learn with, train with, dance with, laugh beside, read with, pull in, hold, feed, welcome. Take that trip with me to THE PEOPLE’S SALON 💇🏿‍♀️🪮💈💄✨ We mobilized on 3/21 @lgbtcenternyc to offer FREE Hair Braiding, Retwists, makeup, nails, clothes and food. We heard from Bayna of @fund_the_inside who taught us what abolition really looks like. And had a fab poetry workshop with @gurliedelux of @iloveladyc where we wrote letters to Black Queer and Trans Political Prisoners in Bedford Correctional Facility! @cmdjazmine provided a fab soundtrack, @thebeautysupplycollective came through with braids for All Ages! When I was kid, I agonized over every migrane, morethansureconvinced it was a tumor the doctor’s kept missing. Wasn’t. I was a quadruple-conscious, anxious thunder clap overthinking my mortality til brain grew bars. The poems needed all those boxes, I guess, who knows. Who? Was the curiousity born in me churned too quickly into caution? Was it fate or fault that led me into my twenty-eigth year, bouncing to keep myself from scratching? Have I shocked these lips into isolated intellectualism disguised as emotional healing? To appease a nation that wants me spiraled in some closet? How, exactly, should words exist in a world at war with everything, even the sun?

“OUTSIDE THE SONNET” attempts to skylight the possibilities of a writerpoet’s voice, beyond the structural prisons of poetic form. This wordchop will raise the ultrainnerstanding purrs of one’s speech, while guiding tongues past linguistic erasure, in recognition of the blocks throated to keep us from channeling our words shamelessly. Why should I contain myselves when there are ancestors no longer holding hiding their grins? Huh.
