Even the most celebrated photographers can appreciate the spontaneity of the photobooth. Richard Avedon created a number of self-portraits over the years—including this series featuring Avedon and his wife Evelyn from 1951. Presented alongside Richard Avedon Immortal, our Classics Model 12 analogue photobooth, courtesy of our friends @fourposesphotobooth, invites you to explore the medium firsthand. Discover Avedon’s approach to portraiture in the galleries, then step into the booth and create a portrait of your own. I’m excited about our upcoming conversation between Frish Brandt and Dr. Samir Sinha, one of the many great programs we’re presenting in conjunction with RICHARD AVEDON: IMMORTAL. Frish Brandt was Richard Avedon’s longtime dealer at San Francisco’s Fraenkel Gallery before retiring in 2024 to become a “letter midwife” who helps people, including the elderly, write critical correspondence to the most important people in their lives. In her words, “A letter, like a photograph, is a contemporaneous note, a time machine, with the power to articulate something now for the future.” Brandt’s wonderful new book, UNFINISHED BUSINESS: THE FIVE ESSENTIAL LETTERS TO WRITE IN YOUR LIFETIME, articulates her mission to help us understand the power of correspondence for communicating with loved ones—in our old age, or at any time. Dr. Samir Sinha is one of Canada’s foremost geriatricians and a leading expert on societal aging. A Rhodes Scholar, he is Director of Health Policy Research at the National Institute on Ageing here at Toronto Metropolitan University, and recently led the development of Canada’s National Long-Term Care Services Standard. At 7 pm on Tuesday, November 17, Brandt will join Dr. Sinha for a conversation upstairs from The Image Centre. Brandt will share stories from her years working with Avedon, as well as insights from her current practice helping people write important letters; Dr. Sinha will offer his perspective on end-of-life care and what he calls the “art of negotiating the surrender.” Together, they will consider how we communicate, reflect and prepare for the later stages of life, and the importance of addressing the things that are often left unsaid. Copies of UNFINISHED BUSINESS will be available for purchase, and a book signing will follow the talk. Space is limited! You can reserve your spot by going to Eventbrite, or by clicking the link following the event description at The Image Centre’s website. SPECIAL NOTE! While the IMC’s galleries are normally closed on Tuesdays, we will open RICHARD AVEDON: IMMORTAL from 6–7 pm before the talk, and again afterwards until 9 pm. Opening Reception | Molly Steels: I Am/Was/Always Join us at The Image Centre on Wednesday, October 28, from 6–8 pm, to celebrate the opening of Molly Steels: I Am/Was/Always, an evolving series that looks to photography as a method of conceptualizing grief and mortality. Using family archives from the past century and conceptual imagery, Steels locates herself within a chain of human experience. She looks to the women who came before her, observing the proof of their existence with reverence and the knowledge that she will one day add to this catalogue. Through this series Steels aims to overshadow existential fear with curiosity. Molly Steels is a Toronto-based artist whose work has been exhibited across Canada. She holds a BFA in Photography from Toronto Metropolitan University. 📍 The Image Centre, 33 Gould Street, Toronto 🗓 Wednesday, October 28, 2026 🕕 6–8 pm Free admission; no registration required. Light refreshments and a cash bar will be available. 📷 Molly Steels, Pauline, 2025, inkjet print, pressed flowers. What did Dorothy Parker think of Richard Avedon's portrayal of her? Curator Paul Roth takes a closer look at Avedon’s portrait of the famed American writer, poet and critic. Known for her heavy drinking as much as for her razor-sharp quips, Parker cultivated an image that made her one of the most recognizable literary personalities of her era. She was also an outspoken activist, supporting civil rights and leftist causes. Health problems and depression plagued her until her death by heart attack in 1967. See this photograph up close and discover more of Avedon’s groundbreaking work in Richard Avedon: Immortal, on view now at The Image Centre. 📷 Richard Avedon Immortal (installation view) © Toni Hafkenscheid, The Image Centre, 2026 📷 Richard Avedon, Dorothy Parker, writer, New York, June 17, 1958, gelatin silver print © The Richard Avedon Foundation Lead Sponsor: Florence Minz Exhibition Sponsors: @hatch.global @homeequitybank Supporting Sponsors: @extendicarecanada, Anju Virmani, the Bulmash-Siegel Private Foundation, @canada.council Media Sponsors: @thetorontostar @zoomermedia Organized by The Image Centre at Toronto Metropolitan University and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (@mbamtl). @avedonfoundation by @imagecentreto
Final days to experience @madi_chow's luminous, experimental series, Overflow. "Chow describes meeting the water at the shoreline in the stillness of early morning, arranging flora, found objects or her own body into a composition before stepping back and letting the current take over. Whatever the water leaves behind on the paper becomes the center of the piece..." Read more about Chow's practice in @museemagazine at the link in bio.
