DX Fest's CLOSING NIGHT FILM @myundergroundmother, directed by @imathefox - plays on Nov. 8 @ 7:00pm.

TICKETS & PASSES:
https://dxfest.com/films/my-underground-mother/

ABOUT THE FILM:
Tamar told her daughter one story about who she was: a fiery redhead, a fighter in the Israeli underground, a woman who insisted she had never been a Holocaust victim. Marisa Fox-Bevilaqua grew up with no reason to doubt it. Then, twenty years after her mother's death, a conversation with a great-aunt who was dying opens a door that Tamar had kept firmly shut.

What follows is a reporter's work as much as a daughter's: combing archives, following faint trails through records that official histories overlooked, and finding women across continents who had their own reasons to stay silent. Fox-Bevilaqua braids documents, testimony and on-the-ground reporting, with animation that gives shape to memory, into an account as rigorous as it is tender.

Film screening followed by Q&A with director Marisa Fox-Bevilaqua, moderated by Franklin Foer, staff writer for @theatlantic.

No music, no beat, no smiles or revelers, just an empty dance floor at Nova @tribe_of_nova in Re’im with memorials and poppies as far as you can wander.

Only the trees where girls were tied and defiled bear witness.
The picnic tables where families and friends joyfully feasted during our harvest holiday sit empty.

No laughter.
Not a sound, except for prayers for the dead.
A MainStage where turntables once spun stands in somber silence, its psychedelic hues a stark contrast to the haunting silence filling the air.

How do you walk on the grounds of a festival that was about art and music, peace & love and became a killing field for 364 beautiful people slaughtered in the prime of their lives?

The people we’ve grown to know and love over three impossible years since Oct 7th — Eden Yerushalmi, whose sister spoke to our @bringhomenow_us group a week or so before her body was found, Hersh Golberg-Polin, whose mother @rachelgoldbergpolin mothers us all with her humanity, Shani Louk, a dual German-Israeli citizen with a promising future in the arts before her mangled body was paraded through the streets of Gaza like a trophy for rapists to prey on, twice victimized, Gal Abdush, a loving mother and wife, reduced to an #oct7 atrocities symbol, known as “the woman in black” in the NYTimes feature “Screams Without Words,” which was vilified by so-called “social justice warriors” for exposing the heinous #sexcrimes committed by a coalition of 6-7,000 groups and individual Gaza civilians led by Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Nukhba special operations brigade, popular front for the liberation of Palestinian (an affiliate of a global group driving campus protests and social media propaganda).

Politics should never obscure humanity. Every life matters. As Elie Wiesel said: “For the living and the dead, we must bear witness.”

May all those who valorize Oct 7th butchers as “resistance” visit these grounds. Your heart just may explode — if you have one. by @imathefox

It’s happening in less than 10 days!

@myundergroundmother is having its Israeli premiere @jwffestival

Thanks to festival sponsor @yadvashem & to our film’s grantors @claims_conference @jewishstorypartners @nehgov @nyscouncilonthearts @nyfacurrent and others, including our research partners @uscshoahfoundation @lohamei_haghetaot @holocaustmuseum & many others

Couldn’t have made this without our excellent team of producers, DPS, editors, scholars, researchers, designers, animators and composers: @deboshaffer @ckellysheehan @logtvfilms @michaelberenbaum @wendy.blackstone @nancyspielberg @chatwithstephen @hgimanhattan @l.m.b.w @phlea.tv @dror_lebendiger @abbykolek @rareich @keithreamer @halilefrat @nelawagman @peterrosenbaum58 @bjornkrondorfer @atinagrossmann @nataliaaleksiun

As we mark 3 years since #oct7, it’s important to understand that #rapeisacrimeagainsthumanity‼️ and it didn’t start with Hamas on that day.

Our film shines a long overdue light on survivors of Nazi-run women’s slave labor camps who reveal the sexual trauma they experienced in the shadows. It’s also a personal mystery about a family secret that led to something much larger and took me over a decade to unravel.

Please join us and together let’s celebrate that brave band of sisters at the heart of the film and amplify their bold voices that were silenced for decades. by @imathefox

You think you know your mother until you don’t.

Twenty years after my mom’s death, I discovered she had a hidden identity and combed the globe in search of her missing past. Was she born Tamar, the freedom fighter and femme fatale she claimed to be? Or was she someone else entirely?

“My Underground Mother,” our award-winning film, traces my unraveling of many secrets, both personal and universal, and my reckoning with the harsh truths many women take to their graves.

As we recite Yizkor today — 33 years after my mom passed — I think of her many incarnations and how reinvention was her path to healing and redemption, enabling her to transform from survivor to thriver, and turn her pain into a higher purpose.

That’s why I’m really excited to share news of our premiere in Israel, the country she fought for, at:

Jerusalem International Women’s Film Festival
Oct 14th 6pm
Jerusalem Cinematheque 1
Sponsored by @yadvashem
For tickets 🎟️ 🍿:

We’re also honored to screen our film in Croatia next Saturday night at:

The Festival of Tolerance
Oct 10 7pm
Bersa Brothers Concert Hall
Rector’s Palace
Zadar
Free!

Thank you the 450 moviegoers who made our sold-out #Toronto premiere so spectacular and to @thethmuseum @daraeden @jackfrieberg @hannaschacter @marvinrubner @esterina65 @EllenGoldstein of #daughtersofsurvivors for sponsoring @myundergroundmother at the @CineplexEmpressWalk

It was a real privilege to share my film with so many descendants of #holocaustsurvivors, particularly Jack & Mathew Frieberg, son and grandson of the indomitable Gerda Frieberg, who illuminated our film with so much insight and humanity about her experiences of Jewish women’s slave labor, as well as Marvin Rubner, who shared his mother’s letters from Gabersdorf and has been a true supporter and friend since the start of my research.

Thanks to everyone who has written me since our screening and for sharing how our documentary has affected them, causing them to view this history with new eyes and a fuller heart. May we continue to amplify women’s marginalized voices, honor their courage, resilience and agency, and lift the shadow of shame from each one of them.

My ultimate role model since I was a little girl growing up on the Upper West side with a closeup view of the #WomensLib movement with Bella Abzug as our Congress woman. It was such an honor to meet her several times through my work as a journalist and on @myundergroundmother. She started @WomenunderSiege to address rape as a war crime and supported efforts to document it during the Holocaust. She also was quick to sign a petition demanding that #Oct7 #sexualviolence be addressed by the global community, something many feminist groups ignored. She was a fearless and tireless advocate for all women, but always with love, joy and a sense of humor. It was a true honor to interview her, see her through the years whether at women’s meetings, the DVF Awards or @Bettyrules holiday shows, and of course to write for Ms. and join her @womensmediacenter 🙌🏽❤️🔥💓 #Gloria #feminism by @imathefox
