DX Fest's CLOSING NIGHT FILM @myundergroundmother, directed by @imathefox - plays on Nov. 8 @ 7:00pm. TICKETS & PASSES: https://dxfest.com/films/my-underground-mother/ ABOUT THE FILM: Tamar told her daughter one story about who she was: a fiery redhead, a fighter in the Israeli underground, a woman who insisted she had never been a Holocaust victim. Marisa Fox-Bevilaqua grew up with no reason to doubt it. Then, twenty years after her mother's death, a conversation with a great-aunt who was dying opens a door that Tamar had kept firmly shut. What follows is a reporter's work as much as a daughter's: combing archives, following faint trails through records that official histories overlooked, and finding women across continents who had their own reasons to stay silent. Fox-Bevilaqua braids documents, testimony and on-the-ground reporting, with animation that gives shape to memory, into an account as rigorous as it is tender. Film screening followed by Q&A with director Marisa Fox-Bevilaqua, moderated by Franklin Foer, staff writer for @theatlantic. Our film shines a long overdue light on survivors of Nazi-run women’s slave labor camps who reveal the sexual trauma they experienced in the shadows. It’s also a personal mystery about a family secret that led to something much larger and took me over a decade to unravel. Please join us and together let’s celebrate that brave band of sisters at the heart of the film and amplify their bold voices that were silenced for decades.

You think you know your mother until you don’t. Twenty years after my mom’s death, I discovered she had a hidden identity and combed the globe in search of her missing past. Was she born Tamar, the freedom fighter and femme fatale she claimed to be? Or was she someone else entirely? “My Underground Mother,” our award-winning film, traces my unraveling of many secrets, both personal and universal, and my reckoning with the harsh truths many women take to their graves. As we recite Yizkor today — 33 years after my mom passed — I think of her many incarnations and how reinvention was her path to healing and redemption, enabling her to transform from survivor to thriver, and turn her pain into a higher purpose. That’s why I’m really excited to share news of our premiere in Israel, the country she fought for, at: Jerusalem International Women’s Film Festival Oct 14th 6pm Jerusalem Cinematheque 1 Sponsored by @yadvashem For tickets 🎟️ 🍿: https://jer-cin.org.il/en/event/98599 We’re also honored to screen our film in Croatia next Saturday night at: The Festival of Tolerance Oct 10 7pm Bersa Brothers Concert Hall Rector’s Palace Zadar Free! https://festivaloftolerance.com/event/moja-majka-iz-ilegale Join us and together let’s shatter the silence of generations of #Jewish #women. #shamemustchangesides

Thank you the 450 moviegoers who made our sold-out #Toronto premiere so spectacular and to @thethmuseum @daraeden @jackfrieberg @hannaschacter @marvinrubner @esterina65 @EllenGoldstein of #daughtersofsurvivors for sponsoring @myundergroundmother at the @CineplexEmpressWalk It was a real privilege to share my film with so many descendants of #holocaustsurvivors, particularly Jack & Mathew Frieberg, son and grandson of the indomitable Gerda Frieberg, who illuminated our film with so much insight and humanity about her experiences of Jewish women’s slave labor, as well as Marvin Rubner, who shared his mother’s letters from Gabersdorf and has been a true supporter and friend since the start of my research. Thanks to everyone who has written me since our screening and for sharing how our documentary has affected them, causing them to view this history with new eyes and a fuller heart. May we continue to amplify women’s marginalized voices, honor their courage, resilience and agency, and lift the shadow of shame from each one of them. #lovetoronto If you’d like to support our film, please check out our website and make a tax-exempt donation to https://www.documentaries.org/films/my-underground-mother/

The Snoopy in Style NYC exhibit was a real delight for a Peanuts fan like me. Go see it if you can. It's free, but you won't be able to get out of the gift shop without being tempted to spend a few bucks.
