Lulu Goldsher-Diamond was born on May 8th on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Her real name is Luella Ruth Goldsher-Diamond, her middle name a tribute to Emily’s late grandmother who I’ve been told Emily gets a lot of her best traits from. She shares a birthday with Bill de Blasio, but she’s already far more popular than our former mayor (and our current one) if the reaction from everybody who meets her is any indication. Thankfully, she looks more like her mother, but has inherited my obsession with Emily. She’s silly, she’s got opinions, she might be the Knicks new good luck charm, she’s the first person born in New York City in either of our families even though this great place plays such a big part in both of our stories. She’s also my greatest accomplishment and I’m going to do everything I can to make sure she’s always loved and supported. by @imjasondiamond

When I was younger I interviewed Lou Koller from Sick of It All for a zine a friend and I were trying to do. I was going through a really hard time and he said some really encouraging stuff that helped push me through that particular period. A lot of people I know who grew up in the punk and hardcore scene have those kinds of stories not just about him, but about how other people in bands or the music they made helped them when they didn’t feel like there was anybody out there who understood or cared, and whenever I hear those stories I think about how lucky we are that we found our way. Lou passed away today. When I heard that, I thought about how I was in a room with him a bunch of years after that interview and thought about going up to him and telling him that we had only met once, but he helped me when I really needed it. I felt a little guilty that I didn’t tell him and now I won’t have my chance, but then I realized he seemed like the sort of person who helped a lot of people he didn’t really know through tough times. May his memory be a blessing. by @imjasondiamond

The latest Date Night in America dispatch from this last Saturday is all out of order, but it started at @daphnesbrooklyn, which we both agree is one of the best damn restaurants in all of Brooklyn. Not only is everything delicious (Jason could have eaten a vat of the beans and merguez we got as a starter), but it’s also one of the best dining rooms around. A little moody and quietly lit, it’s a top-tier Date Night destination. Then we went to our pal’s birthday party at @turtlesallthewaydownbk and we both may have had too many ranch waters because we needed a slice of pizza on the way home before Emily put on a recital with Lulu’s new banjo. 10/10 perfect Date Night. by @imjasondiamond

I’ve lived in Prospect Heights for almost 15 years, so I got to watch the rise of Greg Baxtrom’s little empire along Vanderbilt Ave. (Olmsted,Maison Yaki/Petite Patate, Patti Ann’s) that lasted nearly a decade before it all went away within a year. I went to talk with Batxtrom to find out his story, and some of it was the always-difficult restaurant business, but there was a larger story as well. My latest at @grubstreet by @imjasondiamond

Can you believe that with all the crap that’s happened since June 28th, 1926, we’ve also had Melvin Kaminsky in the world the whole time? It hasn’t been a great century, but at least today we can say Mel Brooks has been alive for a full 100 years. I’d say that’s a pretty huge blessing. by @imjasondiamond
