I’ve probably told you this story, but when I was 10 or so I was traveling in Italy with my parents. We passed a couple in Florence and my dad said, “that’s either my uncle Harry or Mel Brooks.” We circled back and it was Mel and Anne Bancroft. He was delightful. He asked us where we were from. New York. “I used to live in New York but then I moved to L.A. and now it’s one big party!”

After I saw The Producers on Broadway I saw him standing across the street watching the audience come out. Smiling.
