Ethiopia / 2011

These are some of the portraits I shot in 2011 during my 5th time in Ethiopia. In 2005, while traveling to many places, my parents decided they wanted to settle in Ethiopia after falling in love with the country. I was 15 at that time. Together with my sister Jael we made our first trip to Addis Abeba to see if we would migrate there. Although that didn't happen, my parents did start a furniture company there. Throughout all these years my parents would be traveling between the Netherlands and Ethiopia, and sometimes I would join them. Since then I've been connected to a country other than my own.

While selecting these pictures I realised that I grew up since that time. Not only as a maker (this period was during my study at the Fotoacademie and the actual start of my photography / film career), but also as a person. While I wasn't oblivious then to the circumstances in Ethiopia, at that time I was always trying to find the boundaries of what I could make and do as an artist. It felt like a necessity to make photos, without always being aware of the responsibilities that come with that. That year I made photos that I wouldn't make today.

Now, 13 years later, I'm very aware of my privileged position as a white man from a Western country, with parents who supported me and gave me the trust to grow as an artist and as a person. I make more conscious decisions on how I want to interact with people, what motivates me to make my (documentary) work, and try to be more activist where I can. Because I'm in a position to do so.

All this to say, this year I'll go back to Ethiopia with my parents and Wim. My parents dream of being a part of Ethiopia has been fulfilled, and they're looking forward to have other dreams. I'm looking forward to really dive into Ethiopia again, the culture and the people, and see what I have learned since the last time. And see the amazing birds, something that definitely didn't really interest me in 2011. by @immanuel_bom

Last spring I had the pleasure of directing these two one-takers for artist and friend Wessel. We know each other from the film world, but talked about his dream of having a musician's life many years ago. Since I work with dance a lot, having two dancers (Rebecca and Carlo) that would convey the meaning of the songs was an easy choice. I'm very proud to have worked on this project with him and an amazing team.

The plan was to make a connection between the two songs by starting the second film where the first film ended. For this we wanted two completely different locations, one a cityscape, the other a landscape. Together with my colleague and technical rock Kees, we found a way to achieve a one-taker in the city that could both feel spacious and intimate. While Kees was doing his magic behind the camera, I played the song on one phone and called Wessel, Rebecca and Carlo on another phone, trying to give them the cues at the right time while also minding trams and other traffic that would make the movements harder.

For the second song, I wanted to film at a location that is very special to me. I lived in a house in the woods for a while and this was my backyard. It felt so good to be back again and not just see a different grown nature, but also the growth of my own as an artist. For the filming I wanted to go for a personal and handheld look, that would embrace the space of the nature and the dancers in it. Optimistically, we picked a lens that on its own weighed 4.2 kilos. Finding a route through nature that would give the dancers their own space while giving cues and keeping the camera steady was super challenging but ultimately very rewarding.

Some time ago, I had the chance to shoot a scene for the documentary; Fair Jobs together with my co-conspirator @immanuel_bom

We managed to find a beautiful and talented horse (and an equally talented owner). who graciously stood beneath our 1200 watt light (cancelling out the daylight), and who ran a couple of majestic circles around our 25-250mm.

The scene visualizes one of the main characters dreams of one day owning a horse.

The Voice of the Sea Goddess follows Liane’s aunt Aryelle of the House of Hopelezz in a non-linear story of fluidity, transformation, and return. Through the allegory of water and the mermaid’s history as a symbol of queerness, the work reimagines the ocean as a unifying body. Seen through the lens of her Jamaican Revivalist Christian denomination, Aryelle’s role as a healer in the Order of the Water becomes a bridge between sacred tradition and queer mythology. In her church, prayers are offered through wailing—long, mournful cries that echo the haunting call of mermaids. Wearing a latex mermaid tail, Aryelle moves between prophet and siren, church and ocean, embodying the fluidity of identity and the healing power of water. by @immanuel_bom
