Texas is becoming a pipeline for the detention and deportation of children. Of the 925 unaccompanied immigrant children transferred through the federal shelter system in July and August, 651 were sent to Texas many while their immigration cases were still pending.

Families are already confined at Dilley, the nation’s only operating ICE family detention center, as plans move forward for another 528 bed facility near Alexandria, Louisiana. Different systems. Same direction: more beds, faster deportations, and more children behind walls.

These are different stories but they expose the same uncomfortable truth

Children keep ending up inside systems built by adults, and we keep finding softer words for what happens to them.

Detention. Processing. Removal. Staging. Deportation.

A child doesn’t understand bureaucracy.
A child understands whether they are safe.

A border does not make a child disposable. And deportation cannot be where we stop asking what happens to them next.

I refuse to teach my children to look away from yours.

🚨BREAKING NEWS | SAN ANTONIO, TX.

Pedro Mendoza Chavez was hospitalized with a head injury requiring stitches following an encounter with ICE agents in San Antonio. Eyewitness accounts allege Pedro was pulled to the ground during the apprehension and struck his head/neck near a concrete curb. Video from the aftermath shows paramedics treating an injured man before taking him away on a stretcher.

Rep. Joaquin Castro confirmed that Pedro suffered a head injury requiring stitches and said Pedro’s wife had not been able to speak with him or determine where he was. Castro’s office says it is in contact with the family.

As of September 26, Pedro’s current location has not been publicly confirmed, and a complete official account of how his injury occurred has not been released.

This is a developing story. We will update as more information is independently confirmed.

Seven days. Six states.
A snapshot of immigration enforcement across the country.

In one week, public reporting documented a man shot by an ICE officer in Austin, a U.S. citizen mistakenly detained in Illinois, enforcement operations affecting workers and families in Massachusetts and Kansas, a courthouse detention and confrontation in Connecticut, and the death of Carlos Josue Marchena Marchena in ICE custody in Louisiana.

These incidents are different. Some details remain disputed or under investigation. But each became part of the public record within the same seven day period.

This is not meant to be an exhaustive list.

We’re documenting what happened, where it happened, what has been independently reported, and what questions remain unanswered.

We will keep documenting.
We will keep paying attention.

Yesterday, I stood in Alexandria, Louisiana, and spoke about the part of this conversation that cannot become an afterthought the children. Their safety. Their care. The conditions they are held in. And the language used to make the detention and movement of children sound routine, temporary or harmless.

Alexandria does not exist in isolation.

Neither does Dilley.

And neither does Houston.

Texas is already a major hub in the immigration detention system. The Houston area alone is home to four of the nation’s largest immigration detention facilities by average daily population.

At the same time, children are increasingly being moved into Texas. Reporting found that 651 of the 925 unaccompanied children transferred between government shelters during July and August were sent to facilities in Texas.

Now Alexandria is preparing a facility designed to hold as many as 528 people including families and unaccompanied children near an airport already used for deportation flights. That is why I spoke about Dilley, Houston and Alexandria together.

Because these aren’t isolated buildings on a map. They are pieces of a larger system moving human beings including children between facilities, cities and states.

Whatever terminology is used processing center, staging facility, detention center we should still be asking the same questions

Are children safe?
Who is responsible for their care?
Where are they being taken?
How long are they being held?
And who is accountable when adequate care is not provided?

We cannot allow softer language to keep us from asking harder questions.

HAPPENING NOW - in ALEXANDRIA, LOUISIANA: Community members have gathered as Alexandria confronts plans for a new family immigration detention center at England Airpark. We came to participate in today’s public meeting, but were not allowed inside. Right now, we’re gathered outside, listening to the meeting through a speaker. The community showed up to be heard. We’re here, we’re listening, and we’re documenting what happens next. We cannot allow them to open another Dilley. Kids do not belong in detention centers. by @immigratingyouthtexas

Tomorrow, we’re taking the fight against family detention from Texas to Louisiana.

IYT + We the Lucha are headed to Alexandria as the community continues to confront plans for a new ICE facility at England Airpark a 528 bed staging center intended to hold migrant families and unaccompanied children.

We know what family detention looks like because we’ve been organizing around Dilley. We refuse to watch that system expand quietly into another community.

We’re going to listen. To learn. To document. To stand alongside the people of Alexandria who are demanding answers and accountability.
