Yesterday, I stood in Alexandria, Louisiana, and spoke about the part of this conversation that cannot become an afterthought the children. Their safety. Their care. The conditions they are held in. And the language used to make the detention and movement of children sound routine, temporary or harmless.

Alexandria does not exist in isolation.

Neither does Dilley.

And neither does Houston.

Texas is already a major hub in the immigration detention system. The Houston area alone is home to four of the nation’s largest immigration detention facilities by average daily population.

At the same time, children are increasingly being moved into Texas. Reporting found that 651 of the 925 unaccompanied children transferred between government shelters during July and August were sent to facilities in Texas.

Now Alexandria is preparing a facility designed to hold as many as 528 people including families and unaccompanied children near an airport already used for deportation flights. That is why I spoke about Dilley, Houston and Alexandria together.

Because these aren’t isolated buildings on a map. They are pieces of a larger system moving human beings including children between facilities, cities and states.

Whatever terminology is used processing center, staging facility, detention center we should still be asking the same questions

Are children safe?
Who is responsible for their care?
Where are they being taken?
How long are they being held?
And who is accountable when adequate care is not provided?

We cannot allow softer language to keep us from asking harder questions.

Dear Diary,
I don’t often talk about my childhood living in Mexico. Remembering it brings me so much happiness, but also an indescribable sadness. I grieve the life I can no longer be part of and the Mexico my children may never experience the way I did. Rarely do we talk about the lives the narco war shattered and permanently changed. We don’t talk enough about the people who loved their lives in Mexico but were forced to leave behind everything they knew. I had an amazing childhood. Filled with laughter, family, love, days like riding horses and hand picking tamarindos from the trees along the way. I practiced ballet, charreadas, danced flamenco, spent time with friends, and endless nights with my abue at the ranch. My mom owned a restaurant, and if im honest it was one of my favorite places “Las Tres Maria’s”.

Today, as we welcome Hispanic Heritage Month I’m honoring the beautiful Mexico that raised me while holding hope for the Mexico our people deserve. I hope that one day our country experiences another kind of liberation, freedom from corruption, fear, violence, drugs, machismo, and the systems that have stolen far too many lives and far too many children.

Through the grief, I’ve realized that my childhood and every adversity that followed were preparing me for the life I lead today. I don’t believe I could accomplish half of what I do now without everything life has thrown at me. This is a little piece of me that I’m sharing as I try to open up more about my personal life and the moments that shaped me. These are a few memories of why I carry my patria so fiercely, why I stand up for my people, and why I fight for our children. Maybe, just maybe, I was meant to survive all of that adversity so I could help other children never have to experience the same. I will forever be so grateful to be Latina, to be Mexican, and to carry Mexico everywhere I go.

Dear Diary,
Did you miss me?
What a fucking chaotic three weeks it has been. Just when I thought I was going to step away from advocacy to focus on growing my business, our community was shaken by the tragic death of Lorenzo. It completely changed the direction I thought my summer was going to take. These past few weeks introduced me to incredible people I now proudly call friends & also opened my eyes to the realities of our immigration detention system and the work that still lies ahead of us.

This season came with sacrifices. I spent countless hours away from my children because I refuse to organize anything that wasn’t thoughtful, safe, and intentional for our community. I leaned on my intuition more than ever before, and while it guided me in the right direction, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t exhausted. More than anything, these past three weeks gave me clarity. I saw how a movement rooted in protecting people can, in some cases, become something others build careers, brands, and influence from for a profit. That realization broke my heart, but it reminded me exactly who I never want to become.

People will always matter more than platforms.
Community will always matter more than clout.
Integrity will always matter more than recognition.
People will always matter more than profits.

I know I’m not for everyone, and believe me I’m okay with that. The people who continue to believe in me, stand beside me, and trust me action after action remind me that this has never been about being liked. It’s about serving my community with honesty, compassion, and love. This week, I’m stepping away to be fully present for my children. They’ve shared so much of me with this movement, and im grateful but now deserve all of me.

I’ll be back before you know it.
