Studio Archives October 2020: We created a camera obscura installation by covering the windows of Big Small Coffee with black paper and a lens. The inverted image of the hutong street outside was cast onto a screen inside the room, turning the interior into a quiet projection of the outside world.

This installation took place in a community café called Big Small Coffee. This program was part of a curated month-long event titled Stretch the Magic Hour (photography and shadow puppetry workshops). taken in Drum Tower, Beijing China by @imppicstudio

Studio Archives October 2020: We hosted a couple of film photography workshops for children from family-run businesses in our community, including barbershops, grocery stores, and liquor shops. The goal was simple: to have some fun and get the kids out into the sunshine in between of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns in Beijing.

The workshops took place in a community café called Big Small Coffee. This program was part of a curated month-long event titled Stretch the Magic Hour (photography and shadow puppetry workshops). taken in Drum Tower, Beijing China by @imppicstudio

Studio Archives October 2020: We hosted three shadow puppetry workshops in collaboration with the Beijing Queer Chorus. Volunteers of all ages from the community co-created a variety of shadow puppets for six songs themed around queer “species.” These artworks were later used in the official stage performance with the chorus.

Studio Archive October 2020: A black-and-white film roll shot by studio kids during and after a film photography workshop. (I just found and developed it in Chicago, 2026. @cafilmlab )

At that time, Beijing was still under COVID lockdown. Whenever things eased, people would come out, set up something fun outdoors, support one another, and enjoy the sunshine ☀️ There are always families for me in Gulou, the Drum Tower area, Beijing. taken in Drum Tower, Beijing China by @imppicstudio
