Monday morning we woke up in Wollongong Hospital after 4 hours of epidural inspired sleep, for me at least; Ben slept with his shoes on, in the crusty partner lounge.

I was checked again around 6am and left to keep resting while the baby continued to descend. To be honest I don’t really remember how I was feeling at this point, just so ready to meet my baby. It still kind of felt like it was so far away?

When it was time to start pushing, there was soooo many people in the room. Quite the contrast to the quiet calm home birth I was preparing for.

I had two different doctors at my vagina. 2 midwives plus my midwife, my mum, my husband around me and a paediatrician just standing in the corner. I think that was it? Genuinely could’ve been more.

I’m not sure if it was partially due to having had an epidural but damn I just didn’t know how to push, took me a few goes to figure out just how hard I had to push. Ben laughed a few times at how red my face went 🙃

They say labour and birth teach you surrender like nothing else. They are right. Feeling fear? There’s no way out except through. Surrendering to whatever birth is unfolding before you. I thought I was prepared for that, the total surrendering. I was wrong. Nothing prepares you. It just takes you by the hand and leads you when it’s time.

This was not the birth I prepared for. Or envisioned. Or dreamed about. But it was always the birth, the journey, the unraveling, I was going to get. And boy did I have to surrender to it.

I pushed for nearly 2 hours. With 2 people either side holding onto my legs being a force I could push against. The moment her body came out I felt a relief I cannot describe.

My baby was in my arms. I could not believe it.

She was a girl!! She had hair!!

The end did come and my baby arrived.

Our greatest gift.

Sunday morning came and we decided that I’d be checked by my midwife. To my horror I was 4cm. I thought surely not, not after 2 long nights! I tried so desperately not to feel defeated, some women can go from 4 to 10 so quickly, I thought I’ve got this, I’ll be 10cm soon.

Not long after this I remember just crying, scared. Scared to push this baby out. Like what do you mean I have to push this baby out! It was one of those moments you almost feel like you’re a little child. I just felt so scared.

I feel like it was midday - ish (I had no comprehension of time, I’m guessing here) when I felt a bearing down sensation and I asked my mum when I should take my pants off lol, she said if you’re asking that question then probably now. It really shifted gears after this. The intensity of these contractions was nothing I’d yet felt.

It somehow got dark, the hours passed in a total blur.

Looking back on a video, I heard myself asking my midwife if I was near the end and I got so sad when she said she can’t tell me if I’m near the end or not. I just felt like it was NEVER going to end.

I just could not see the end. I couldn’t see the baby coming.

My midwife check me again around 7pm? Again, guessing. And I was 6cm…. I remember saying ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME. Just 2cm in 12 hours.

I felt totally and utterly defeated at this point.

I was exhausted beyond comprehension. It was 7pm-ish Sunday evening and contractions start about 3pm Friday afternoon.

I just wanted to sleep. I wanted to sleep so badly.

I had this feeling all day that I was going to hospital, just this silent thought in the back of my mind that I didn’t dare voice. I thought that going to the hospital meant automatic cesarean.

My midwife gave me options.

My mum gave me the permission I needed to hear.

“You can go to the hospital, you can get some help, you can have an epidural, get some sleep and then you can have the energy to push this baby out”

I cried with relief.

Off to the hospital we go.

After deciding okay we are transferring to the hospital, the contractions went NEXT LEVEL. I could barely move two steps without contracting (in hindsight, I do wonder by @indiabarry

First night of labour consisted of contractions mostly on the couch with Rufus next to me, both of us using Harry Potter as a distraction to stay awake.

I tried to go to bed at about 11pm but then woke up mid contraction and let me tell you, that sent me into a panic. I had to run to the toilet, was shaking, felt sick, didn’t know what was happening… well safe to say that was the end of trying to go to sleep for me. Cue Harry Potter.

At sunrise we walked around our building, letting that morning light give me some energy. Contractions slowed right down so we went to the beach. Doing laps up and down the beach asking ourselves again, do you think we’ll meet our baby tonight?

Things definitely kicked into gear that afternoon. Contractions got stronger and closer together and labour well and truly begun.

My midwife came around midnight. Being my first birth I was so caught up in not knowing when we should ask her to come, everything felt so strong and so intense, so surely now right?

Through the night I was beyond exhausted, I was having micro sleeps standing up and they were genuinely worse than some of the contractions. I was begging for sleep at this point.

It got to Sunday morning and we had not yet met our baby. by @indiabarry

My waters broke this day a year ago and the journey to meet our daughter began. I called Ben at 11am when they broke and I remember thinking, wow, are we going to meet our baby today? The thought felt so huge, the moment was huge.

Little did I know, I was about to enter a 70 something hour WILD ride.

Nothing prepares you for what labour is. It is so insanely hard to explain to someone who hasn’t been through it.

It was the hardest thing ever I’ve done, but can’t wait to do it again one day.

There is a lot more to this, hopefully I can put it into words over the next couple of days ♥️ by @indiabarry
