Four eagles most people walk straight past. One eats snakes, one changes its outfit, one dives at 300 kph, and one fishes for a living.

From folklore to wetlands.

For centuries, people believed storks delivered newborn babies, a charming myth that turned these birds into symbols of life and new beginnings.

But the real story is just as meaningful. Storks are guardians of wetlands. Their presence tells us that rivers, marshes, and floodplains are still alive with fish, frogs, and countless other species.

Protect the wetlands, and the storks will always find their way home.

When swallows start flying low, rain isn’t far behind.

As barometric pressure drops and humidity rises, insects move closer to the ground and swallows follow their prey, swooping lower than usual. For generations, this has been one of nature’s most reliable signs that rain is on the way.

On World Meteorological Day, a reminder that the wild often senses the shift in the atmosphere before we do.

Small, familiar, and often overlooked, the sparrow has lived alongside humans for centuries.

From delicate bird-and-flower paintings of ancient China, to the bustling streets of modern cities, this tiny bird has always been part of everyday life.

Today, the House Sparrow, also the state bird of Delhi , reminds us of something important: even the most common creatures can quietly disappear.

Urbanisation, changing architecture, and shrinking green spaces have made sparrows far less common in many cities.

On International Sparrow Day, it’s a moment to notice the small things again, the flutter on a balcony, the chatter in the morning, the life that shares our spaces.

Because sometimes, protecting nature begins with the smallest birds. by @indiabirdwatching

Feeding habits of birds are as diverse as the avian world itself. Each species has evolved unique strategies for finding food, adapted to their environment and physical traits. Take, for instance, the striking Crimson Sunbird pictured here. Its black beak is perfectly designed to catch and consume fish, amphibians, and insects, making it a skilled predator near water bodies.

While some birds, like hummingbirds, sip nectar, others—such as raptors—hunt for prey. Granivorous birds, like sparrows, crack open seeds with their sturdy beaks, while insectivores like woodpeckers forage for insects hidden within tree bark.

These feeding techniques not only help birds survive but also contribute to the delicate balance of ecosystems. By pollinating plants, controlling insect populations, and dispersing seeds, birds play a vital role in maintaining biodiversity.

This World Sustainability Day, we planned to reflect on the environmental impact of our celebrations while keeping the festive spirit alive.

During Diwali, noise pollution levels can spike by up to 15 decibels, disturbing the birds and animals. Firecrackers release harmful chemicals that contribute to smog and breathing difficulties for wildlife and pets. By opting for quieter, eco-friendly celebrations, we can reduce air and noise pollution and protect the natural habitats around us.

Let’s celebrate Diwali with the glow of diyas, the beauty of nature, and a commitment to sustainability.

In Indian culture, we believe that a dancing peacock is said to signal the arrival of rains. Their true motivation however to dance in its full glory is an innate evolutionary trick used to communicate strength and fitness to potential mates.

The larger and more colourful the spread, better the chances of attracting a mate. Its loud, resonating call plays an equally important role. Echoing through the forest, it invites both the rivals and potential mates to bask in the display of their superiority, claiming the reign to take their lineage forward.

In the wild, these displays are key survival tactics, with each note and movement serving a distinct purpose in the courtship process.

Ever witnessed this magnificent dance? 🦚Comment to share your experience.

India’s birdlife is as diverse as its landscapes, home to more than 1,300 species, many of which are endangered or vulnerable. At Nature Safari India, our focus extends beyond tigers—we’re committed to conserving the habitats that support a wealth of bird species, from the colourful Black-Backed Dwarf Kingfisher to the majestic Koklass Pheasant.

Our birding tours are designed not just for enthusiasts but for those who want to contribute to the protection of avian life. By supporting responsible birdwatching, you help protect wetlands, forests, and grasslands that birds call home. Eco-conscious tourism provides much-needed funds for habitat restoration and encourages local communities to engage in preservation rather than harmful practices like deforestation.

Every bird sighting is a reminder of the delicate ecosystems we work to protect. Together, we can ensure these skies remain filled with the vibrant calls and colours of India’s birds for generations to come.
