A book club discussion with a twist! Read the book, see the art, discuss in communion. 🌟 Join Casual Readers Club at Hauser Wirth London to explore the exhibition, ‘Lorna Simpson. Previous & Ongoing in conversation with Toni Morrison ‘Tar Baby’.  Coming to prominence in the 1990s for her pioneering approach to conceptual photography, Lorna Simpson’s masterful paintings have become a defining facet of her creative output following her turn to the medium in 2014.  From multi-panel compositions and large-scale paintings to sculpture, the works on view are anchored by the artist’s sustained engagement with found defunct photographic news archive photography, particularly from Ebony Magazine (https://www.ebony.com/).  Treating these fragments of the past as carriers of memory, she sources, reconfigures and reproduces archival material to both reveal how histories persist and accrue new meaning over time. In Toni Morrison’s work, memory is not a passive archive or a simple recall of the past; it is a living, material force, an act of creation, and a mechanism of trauma and recovery. In Tar Baby memory acts as a battlefield between cultural heritage and modern assimilation. It explores how the characters handle their personal and collective histories, using memory not just as a tool for reflection, but as a driving psychological and cultural force. We invite you into the space to experience the exhibition and ruminate on themes in the artist’s and author’s work in tandem. We’ll then all take part in a discussion exploring the overarching themes of both work, and finish with a reflective tactile exercise. We hope you’ll join us. Get in loser, we’re talking about morality🤪 Wednesday 11th November from 6:30PM at @thesoltroom We’re not gonna do a long ting setting up the framework for this discussion, the self-righteousness of the loser is something that comes up in the media time and time again. Think Lindsay Lohan’s character in Mean Girls. The nerds from Superbad. Lena Dunham in Girls. All the characters in Rejection by Tony Tulathimutte. The woman behind the Club Chalamet account. People see being a loser as a virtue. They believe that assuming this role means they’re automatically a good, nice, kind and morally just person. They therefore associate their own behaviour, whatever shape that takes, as justified because they’ve accepted they’re not the main character and have taken a back seat to the action in some way. hosting this with the girl with the best voice Georgina. We’ll have a handful of interrogating prompts on hand to aid discussion and encourage authentic connection. There’s no homework for this one, so all you need to do is come ready to chat. 👉🏽Respectfully, tickets are non-refundable and go towards organisational and facilitation costs. Please bear this in mind before purchasing. 📽️Heads up! Photography and videography will be taking place during the event and will be added to our digital archive and may be used to promote future events. by @indiaindyinds

Are we all thinking about ourselves a bit too much? Something that comes up A LOT at book club is this big question of whether we need to see ourselves reflected in art to be able to connect to it? People often say they didn’t enjoy a book because they couldn’t relate to the characters or the situation said characters find themself in. Or sometimes LOVE it because the protagonist has the same commute and favourite childhood meal as they do. In a world where we’re constantly being encouraged to journal, therapise, optimise, morning routine max and look INWARDS have we all become a bit too self obsessed and hyper focused on knowing the self? Is there actually a bit more power in admitting we’re all mystical fully unknowable entities having our first human experience and just letting go and letting things flow over us? How much can we learn from analysing vs experiencing? We haven’t hosted a salon discussion in a while and we’re dying to get these rolling again, so let’s discuss! We’re meeting at @ritzy_cinema at the upstairs bar, grab a ticket in our bio. We’ll have a handful of interrogating prompts on hand to aid discussion and encourage authentic connection. There’s no homework for this one, so all you need to do is come ready to chat. Hosted by myself and the woman with the best voice ever, @georgjade 👉🏽Respectfully, tickets are non-refundable and go towards organisational and facilitation costs. Please bear this in mind before purchasing. 📽️Heads up! Times are strange but words are real, and life would make absolutely no sense without books I had India Chambers, founder of Casual Readers Book Club, in the studio with me to discuss, reminisce and giggle about all things literature: escapism, empathy, the publishing industry, reading dates, men vs fiction and beloved ex English teachers! Books mentioned: The Trees by Percival Everett Hopscotch by Julio Cortázar The Princess of 72nd Street by Elaine Kraf Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe There There by Tommy Orange. Tune in tomorrow afternoon, 12pm on @rinse.fm to hear the full show❤️ by @indiaindyinds
