icl i went through my camera roll to do a 2025 wrap up but got distracted by all the mirror pics, so, text only highlights instead: • debut novel came out in paperback • debut play went on tour • had my second solo exhibition in south london • made a magazine ‼️ • won a scholarship • moved countries • travelled, like, waaaay more than i should have done • tried my fuckn best • looked really hot 2025 might have been the hardest year of my life but pressure makes diamonds n tha 💎 wrote a lot of cards this year telling ppl i’m grateful for them. can’t recommend it enough x

‼️8️⃣th book club of 2025, wrapped‼️ our first library pick this month was Second-Class Citizen by Buchi Emecheta and what a wonderful evening we spent discussing this work- we kicked off this special session with a introduction from @ma.kevelli on the Uzo Egonu’s exhibition, which is open at The Museum of the Home until December for those of you wanting to pop down to catch it yourselves. we urge you to go see these works and spend time in the magically curated space. we then got cosy drinking @supermalt_ and eating @oluolufoods plantain chips and settled in to discuss Second Class Citizen. this book packs a punch and covers so much ground! buchi’s writing is funny, matter of fact, harrowing and fiercely confident at all times. her work is often autobiographical and she’s an author that needs to be on your radar, he words are direct and offer an unflinching representation of motherhood, self determination, independence and the impact of societal structures on the woman in both traditional Nigerian culture and in the UK. we really enjoyed this one and would definitely recommend! thank you for all of you that joined us, we donated the proceeds from ticket sales to Hibiscus Initiative a feminist, anti-racist and intersectional women’s organisation. we spoke about: - double colonisation - the wickedness of an embarrassed man - interracial relationships - farming + childcare - burning manuscripts - tribalism - autobiography vs fiction - finding drive irregardless of your circumstances ++ more 📎As always, we’ve compiled a list of secondary sources and recommendations for you: - An American Marriage by Tayari Jones - Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - Small Island by Andrea Levy - The Lonely Londoners by Sam Selvon - An Orchestra of Minorities by Chigozie Obioma - The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Daré - Determination by Tawseef Khan - The First Woman by Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi - White Teeth by Zadie Smith - The Famished Road by Ben Okri - The Bread the Devil Knead by Lisa Allen-Agostini - Love After Love by Ingrid Persaud - Call the Midwife (BBC series) - The Estate (National Theatre) - Farming (2018 film with Damson Idris)

Book clubs aren’t a new concept. Readers have been coming together to chat about their favourite books for centuries, but book clubs and reading communities have seen a recent boom in popularity. ⁠ ⁠ Yes, BookTok may have a lot to answer for when it comes to the rise in reading, book clubs and retreats. But since the pandemic, there’s also been an underlying but ever-present need for community and meaningful connection. And now, with 2026 being the national year of reading, more and more people are expected to seek out communities to read and engage with books alongside others.⁠ ⁠ Earlier this month, Shahed Ezaydi (@shahedezaydi), staff writer, sat down with three bookish founders – Sofia Akel (@sofiaakel), India Chambers (@indiaindyinds) and Kuuku ‘Que’ Quakyi (@quethewolf) – to chat about their thriving reading communities and their 2026 plans.
