Fly fishing is about more than catching fish. At Wind River, it creates opportunities to spend time outdoors, build confidence, learn new skills, and develop a connection to the rivers and landscapes that surround us. Time on the water has a way of changing people. It teaches patience, focus, and respect for the natural world. It creates space to slow down, connect, and see things differently. Sometimes the value of fishing is not measured by the fish you catch, but by what you take home with you when the day is over. #indifly #windriverreservation #indiflycorps #conservation #sustainability by @indiflyfoundation
Did you know? Arapaima are weird creatures. They can grow over 100 inches long and can weigh over 450lbs; the largest scaled fresh-water fish on earth. They are living fossils that have been on earth for approximately 13 million years. They are obligatory air breathers, using a modified swimbladder as a pseudo-lung. They breathe air by rising to the surface and making loud gulps. They feed by flaring their gills and sucking in their prey. This is so loud it can be heard from above the water. When we fish for them we look for three distinct signs; one is the roll when they come up for air, the second is bubbles when they exhale or disturb the bottom and the third is mud; when they stir up the bottoms with their tails.  There is still so much we don’t know about these fish.  In the rivers of Guyana, that mystery is still intact. Protected by communities who understand that some things aren’t meant to be rushed, or fully explained. 📸: @johanndupreez_art #Indifly #rewaecolodge #guyana #arapaima #firstwesavethefishandnowthefisharesavingus by @indiflyfoundation
Arapaima will eat just about anything that fits in their mouths. Protein is protein. We have seen them engulf adult peacock bass without flinching. They hunt actively, taking peacock bass, red belly piranha, arowana and smaller catfish. But they often focus on silver bait (locally called basket fish), tetras and other jungle minnows, flaring their gills to suck in handfuls at a time. Rewa guides tie baitfish patterns of 4 to 8 inches on sturdy 6/0 hooks. Peacock bass imitations and brush flies in black and purple, grey and white, and olive and white are some of our best. Add a splash of orange, but avoid red. The piranhas will make a meal of it. #indifly #rewalodge #guyana #arapaima #firstwesavethefishandnowthefisharesavingusindifly by @indiflyfoundation
What gear to pack Big fish need big gear. We fish 12-weight rods with 380 to 450 grain lines and sturdy reels. For most situations, we recommend intermediate lines with low stretch and high core strength, and floating lines when the water gets low. In deeper ponds, use a 6 to 9 foot straight fluorocarbon leader, 80 to 100 pound test. When the water is low, 80 to 100 pound monofilament leaders of 5 to 8 feet work best. A powerful rod is a must. Moving a fish over 200 pounds takes serious backbone. The reel is the least important part of your setup, because we keep most fish off the reel. Arapaima rarely make long runs, and playing the fish with line in hand gives you more control and contact. Their bony mouths are incredibly hard, so keep maximum tension throughout the fight. Most fish are lost when the angler reels in slack before the fish is under control. Be patient and keep stripping. Want to learn more about choosing the right flies for arapaima? A community of just a few hundred people calls Anaa home. For generations, the lagoon has provided food, opportunity, and a way of life. That relationship is easy to see in the way people interact with the ocean and with each other. Spend time on the island and you are likely to be met with a smile, a story, or an invitation to share a meal. The fishery may bring visitors to Anaa, but getting to know the people who live here offers a much better understanding of the place. 📸: @davemccoyewa #indifly #anaaatoll  #indiflycorps #conservation #sustainability by @indiflyfoundation
Arapaima are the largest scaled freshwater fish on the planet. You know it’s a big fish when it’s measured in meters. To get an arapaima to eat a fly is no small feat. To actually land one on fly requires travelling to a remote jungle location, stout gear, a patient guide and a bit of luck. Since our first introduction to this incredible species in 2011, we have dedicated our efforts to protecting arapaima, perfecting the techniques to catch and release them, and creating an economy to sustain the guides and staff. Today, @rewalodge and Indifly are recognized as leaders in the field of arapaima fishing. Fishing on Anaa is only part of the experience. Days here are shaped by the tides, wind, and changing light across the lagoon. Shallow flats stretch in every direction, while birds work the shoreline and fish move through remarkably clear water. There is also a slower pace to life here. You spend more time watching, moving quietly, and paying attention to what is happening around you. The fish may be the reason many people come to Anaa, but the landscape and everyday experience are what make the trip memorable. 📸: @davemccoyewa #indifly #anaaatoll  #indiflycorps #conservation #sustainability by @indiflyfoundation

Today we celebrate Indigenous Peoples, thank you for being the custodians of our planet’s biodiversity. Fish are worth more alive than dead, and the communities who have protected these waters for generations deserve to lead and benefit from their future. We are honored to stand with you. Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day. #indifly #indiflycorps #conservation #sustainability by @indiflyfoundation
Several years ago, the community made a decision to temporarily stop harvesting bonefish during peak spawning season. The practice, known as a rāhui, gives the fish time to complete an important part of their life cycle and helps support healthy populations. The idea is simple: give the fish time to spawn, and the lagoon can continue to provide for the community. Conservation does not always require complicated solutions. Sometimes it means understanding the resource, knowing when to step back, and giving it time to recover. On Anaa Atoll, that knowledge has been part of managing the lagoon for generations. #indifly #anaaatoll #indiflycorps #conservation #sustainability by @indiflyfoundation
Anaa is a remote atoll surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, with a vast lagoon, miles of shallow flats, and a remarkable bonefish fishery. The local name for bonefish is kiokio. They are an important part of life on the island and one reason anglers travel from around the world to experience these waters. But the fishery is only part of what makes Anaa interesting. People here have a close relationship with the ocean and the resources it provides. That connection has shaped how the community uses and cares for the lagoon, helping maintain a fishery that remains an important part of life on the island. 📸: @davemccoyewa #indifly #anaaatoll #indiflycorps #conservation #sustainability by @indiflyfoundation
