@_bookish_lives_ recently tagged me in a challenge that took her hours to complete (so please do check out her post if you haven’t!). After completing it myself, I can see why—my thumb hurt from scrolling to find all these pictures!

This challenge has also made me wonder how often one must do or think about something for it to be an obsession. Books, for example, are something I read almost every day; travel, on the other hand, is something I do once or twice a year. And should I have added “pink” to this list?

My own uncertainty aside, do you share any of these obsessions? by @indirauthor

Hi everyone! I created this new account to give my long-suffering friends and family a break from my bookish opinions. So excited to meet you all!

A reader compatibility test seems like the perfect way to start. Do we have the same taste in either fiction or nonfiction? The possible range is -90 to 180. Comment your score!

As always, this video is my own interpretation of the text. Han didn’t explicitly group his ideas this way, but this grouping helped me remember some key points.

Question: what are your tips to remember more of what you read? by @indirauthor

Thank you to @the_memory_museum and @graywolfpress for sending me this copy!

This was supposed to be my first ARC review, but I sadly didn’t finish reading before publication. On the bright side, at least anyone else interested in these stories no longer has to wait to read them! by @indirauthor

The Divine Economy is a tricky book to talk about, as its many ideas feel a bit disjointed, but each is interesting on its own: trends in religiosity, how religions and governments exchange legitimacy, and how to prevent abuse of institutional power.

Even more challenging is trying to describe the platform model of religion in an impartial way! Seabright treats the sacred as mundane, an act which in itself could offend many believers. That is not my intention at all; I simply want to share an interesting concept. Let me know your thoughts!

Guess I was hoping for some Adrian Tchaikovsky-style science fiction!

If you’ve read this book, what did you think?

What do you think of this topic? The general idea is ancient, but Han’s way of linking philosophy to contemporary life feels fresh.

Also note: I tried to sound a bit less nervous in this video compared to previous ones. But that made me even more nervous! (I have yet to free myself from centrality in my own life.) So please forgive any weird vocal effects!

I’m so happy to be back on bookstagram! Between other responsibilities, a reading slump, and freezing weather, posting reviews really fell by the wayside. So thank you for sticking with me!

Both Determined and Free Agents were recommended by @osas_book_club, who has awesome taste in nonfiction!

I visited the library to pick up some favorite children’s books because @nancyslitlounge is leading a campaign to raise funds for children with San Filippo disease, a rare neurodegenerative illness.

You can participate using the tag #kidlitforacure.

It’s a bit difficult to read the titles in this stack, so here’s the list, from top to bottom:

1. The Mysterious Benedict Society
2. Ramona Quimby, Age 8
3. Tuck Everlasting
4. The Giver
5. The Lightning Thief
6. Children of the Lamp: The Akhenaten Adventure

Do you see any old favorites? by @indirauthor

Today I’m revealing another nitpicky and subjective criterion for “good” science fiction. That subjectivity (plus the great discussion on an older reel asking whether to rate DNFs) is why I haven’t been sharing my star ratings of books.

Do you have highly particular things you look for, depending on genre?

@book.bent.brain recently shared 10 essential picture books and inspired me to post my favorites, too!

I can’t guarantee that kids will enjoy these kidlit picks, but I did read lots of picture books (while writing my own) over the summer, and these 10 stood out!

(My top favorite is definitely personal taste, though, as the book reminds me of one of my favorite nonfiction reads.)

Do you enjoy picture books? And if you have kids, what are their favorites?
