LUMPIA FOR LIFE 🇵🇭 Filipino spring rolls are easy to make at home and always a crowd favorite! This is my own recipe (link in bio!) that we’re using at my modern Filipino restaurant @barkada.hk, though we serve them with my own Pineapple Chili Sauce and substitute the pork and beef with chicken so even non-red meat eaters can enjoy these 😋 Definitely feel free to make substitutions at home! Regardless of your filling, @oxo’s frying thermometer and cooling rack ensure you have perfectly crispy spring rolls every time 💯

🍕 60 DIFFERENT SLICES OF PIZZA IN 60 DAYS 😛 Comment “PIZZA” to get my full guide on the best pizzerias and slice shops in NYC 🗽

I beat my record of 27 slices in 21 days from last year’s trip back to NYC (I actually ate more than 60 if I count every single slice esp with all the slices I ate while testing my Filipino pizzas at my faves @razzanj and @mamas_too! 🇵🇭🥳).

🇵🇭 PILIPINO KA BA? | EPISODE 40 | Meet Jen Balisi, Content Creator, Author, Owner of Barkada Hong Kong

The other day I ran into Jen Balisi (@indulgenteats), the food blogger turned cookbook author turned restauranteur, who got her start by documenting her recipes and dining experiences in New York more than 15 years ago.

Opening her modern Filipino restaurant Barkada (@barkada.hk) in 2023, she was on her way to Kalye (@kalye.nyc) to showcase her restaurant’s most popular dishes for a pop-up.

Jen’s biggest lesson after being in the food industry for well over a decade? Learning how to ask for help.

After facing the challenges of being a restauranteur, especially in a place where the Filipino population is plenty but the Filipino restaurants are few and far between, knowing that the community you’ve built around you is there to help when you ask is an invaluable lesson that any entrepreneur can learn.

If you get a chance to visit Barkada in Hong Kong, I highly recommend their “Spicy Coconut Prawn Noodles.” The richness of the sauce, with its nuttiness from the coconut and umami from the bagoong (shrimp paste), easily makes my list for some of the best noodles I’ve ever tasted.

Thank you for feeding me, Jen! I cannot wait for our next food adventure whether that’s here in New York, back home in Manila or out there in Hong Kong to see Barkada in person.

I booked a last minute trip to join my husband on his work trip and found this spot that originally hails from Fukuoka serving wonderfully chewy, bouncy udon with the most luxurious sukiyaki Kuroge Wagyu beef that’s torched right in front of you 🔥 The egg mixes into a sauce that is so flavorful from their umami-rich seasoning blend (especially if you add truffle!)

This was my 8th time in Tokyo, but my first time bringing our baby girl so stay tuned for more from our trip including all the baby-friendly spots we visited!

It’s an honest mistake to pronounce things incorrectly when you aren’t familiar with the cuisine, like a girl who recently went viral for calling ube “OOB” since she rhymed it with “cube” 😅
