We’re thrilled to share that Sarah Wass has been named our Interim Executive Director for The Industry! Our outgoing Artistic and Executive Director, Tim Griffin, leaves us with a strong administrative and financial foundation, not to mention a remarkable legacy of artistic innovation and community building, and we thank him for his years of dedication.

From Sarah:

I couldn’t be more excited to be here at this particular moment. While this is a new role for me, I am certainly not new to The Industry. In fact, my history with the organization dates back to its very origins. If you attended Crescent City, that was me in the orchestra loft, playing various flutes and, at times, pretending to be a shakuhachi while navigating Anne LeBaron’s richly nuanced and colorful composition. If you came to Invisible Cities, that was me on flute in your headphones as you wandered through Union Station, accompanied by the haunting and melancholy strains of Chris Cerrone’s score. And if you traveled the Green Route as part of Hopscotch, you saw me in Chinatown Plaza performing a mystical scene composed by my dear friend Veronika Krausas that never failed to create a wash of wonder on the faces of passersby who had suddenly found themselves in the middle of an opera.

The Industry’s mission—to experiment boldly while creating inclusivity and access to the arts—strongly resonates with my own background as both a performer and advocate of new music and a music educator who has worked with historically underserved communities throughout Los Angeles. We are working with innovative artists on a dynamic slate of programming that we can’t wait to share with you in the coming months. And our more frequent gatherings that allow for experimenting around opera at an intimate scale will continue in 2027 in different locations around Los Angeles, featuring members of our stellar company of artists.

As I step into this role, I’m especially excited to reconnect with the many people who have helped make The Industry what it is today, and to welcome those who may be discovering us for the first time. I hope you’ll join us for what comes next and continue to imagine with us what opera can be. taken in Los Angeles, California by @industryopera

Three regalia pieces I created for @industryopera’s groundbreaking opera Sweet Land are now on view at the Underground Gallery at Yorkshire Sculpture Park in Britain as part of Hold to This Earth: Works by Contemporary Indigenous North American Artists from Tia Collection, on view through April 2027. @yspsculpture @tiaartcollection

Sweet Land (2020) opera begins with the Arrivals washing ashore and making contact with another civilization they call the Hosts. From there, the story fractures, following multiple perspectives. Beginning as a procession through Los Angeles State Historic Park, the opera ultimately erases itself, challenging familiar narratives of Manifest Destiny through Indigenous and experimental storytelling.

Sweet Land was created through a deeply collaborative process with Director Yuval Sharon and my contributions as Director and Costume Designer, Composers Raven Chacon and Du Yun, and Librettists Douglas Kearney and Aja Couchois Duncan. As The New York Times wrote, “Sweet Land is a bewildering and ghostly new opera... a parable of, and fantasia on, Manifest Destiny.”

Representing more than 35 Tribal Nations and multiple generations of artists, Hold to This Earth celebrates Indigenous artists who honor ancestral knowledge while remaining unapologetically contemporary. Bringing these works together creates a powerful conversation across Nations, generations, and artistic practices, affirming that Indigenous cultures are living, evolving, and actively shaping the future. I’m honored to have the regalia from Sweet Land, along with additional works from my practice included in this exhibition.

The Industry is thrilled to announce our world premiere production with Tania León, Si me tocaras el corazón (“If You Touched My Heart”), which has been selected as one of seven recipients of the 2026 Commissioning Grants from OPERA America’s Women Composers program. This esteemed award promotes the development of new work by women-identifying composers and brings visibility to women composers across the field.

Based on the eponymous short story by renowned Chilean-American author Isabel Allende, Si me tocaras el corazón is slated for full presentation in late 2028, with direction by The Industry’s artistic co-director emeritus Malik Gaines and Alexandro Segade. It will be The Industry’s first production in Spanish.

Tania León, born in Havana, Cuba, is one of the most acclaimed musicians of her generation, renowned as a composer, conductor, and educator. In 2021, she was the first Latin American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Music. Amongst her many accolades and achievements, León was the first music director of the Dance Theatre of Harlem, held Carnegie Hall’s Richard and Barbara Debs Composer’s Chair for its 2023–2024 season, and was composer-in-residence with the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 2023 to 2025.

Everyone at The Industry is deeply grateful to Opera America, which has also generously supported our previous work with Ellen Reid (Hopscotch) and Du Yun (Sweet Land). Please stay tuned for more announcements about this amazing production––already years in the making! taken in Los Angeles, California by @industryopera

July 4 marks the 250th anniversary of the United States, a moment to reflect on how the nation’s story has been told and retold.

‘Sweet Land’ by Raven Chacon and Du Yun reframes origin stories through layered perspectives, bringing together ritual, history, and myth to reveal a more complex American narrative. The opera brings together librettists Aja Couchois Duncan and Douglas Kearney and co-directors Cannupa Hanska Luger and Yuval Sharon, whose work collectively challenges established histories and reexamines the evolving idea of the American dream.

This Independence Day, revisit ‘Sweet Land’, a work that invites us to rethink what we inherit and broaden how we understand America today.

“My country, ‘tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. That’s not the United States of America. That’s already the beginning of a mythical land.” — Douglas Kearney, librettist, Sweet Land

“What if we show erasure? What if we show revision? What if we show remixing and let people see what’s happening when myth is being made?” — Cannupa Hanska Luger, co-director, Sweet Land

As the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding approaches on July 4, we’ve been reflecting on our collective histories and, more specifically, our inspiring production, Sweet Land: an opera devoted to thinking through our country’s legacy of myth-making, and to weaving our traditional origin story into a more richly nuanced and complex narrative, inviting Americans from all backgrounds to join the conversation.

“The addition of The Industry’s Listening Party series has been a true delight. It provides a welcoming and supportive environment for both experiencing and performing new music. Having a recurring series dedicated to contemporary work serves as a valuable reminder that, just like in popular music, there is always exciting and innovative music being created within our own genre.

As a company member, I’ve had the pleasure of performing on several programs. The series has given me opportunities to share and test new projects I’ve been developing, while also reconnecting with colleagues and collaborators throughout the industry.

Perhaps most importantly, the Listening Party series has strengthened the sense of community within the company. It has created a gathering place not only for company members, but also for a broader audience of people who are passionate about new music and artistic exploration. Since its introduction, The Industry has felt even more connected, vibrant, and welcoming—a true community centered around creativity and shared discovery.” – Cedric Berry

People are raving about The Industry’s Listening Parties, which have become one of our signature programs, inviting artists across disciplines to  experiment with opera and navigate uncharted territory in receptive, intimate settings. These artist-driven gatherings are made possible only by a community of audiences like you, and—looking to the season ahead—we ask you to become a member supporting these artistic efforts today.

“I was thrilled to be invited to present a listening party centering around my three operatic works combining Shakespeare, Hopscotch and ghost stories. Veronika Krausas and Her Rogues’ Gallery was a celebration for both the performers and audience and to remember what it’s like to play and wander through those different ‘landscapes’. I love the magical and intimate nature of Monk Space within which everyone could explore.

It was fabulous to preview a work by our group SPRUNG, which combines storytelling, music and movement. The Industry is always adventurous and working with them is so inspiring, fun and exciting. Long live opera in all its manifestations.” – Veronika Krausas

“The Industry has always stretched the definition of what opera can be, and the Listening Party series is a wonderful extension of that mission. By stripping away traditional formality, the series completely democratizes the experience—turning what is often a rigid ‘temple’ into an informal, back-and-forth conversation between artist and audience. It gave me a unique, intimate platform to share the interior world of my work with a community that feels genuinely connected to the process.” – Christopher Cerrone

As we reflect on our 2025/26 season, everyone here at The Industry is filled with gratitude for all that our artists—and you—helped us accomplish.

Across five Listening Parties in the fall and spring featuring artists from Christopher Cerrone to Jlin, and throughout our LAB Festival presented in collaboration with REDCAT during February featuring new works by Guillermo E. Brown, Carmina Escobar, and Matana Roberts, you showed up with open ears and open minds as a generation of composers and performers explored avenues for art making room for new voices, new ideas, and new audiences.

These artist-driven gatherings are made possible only by a community of audiences like you, and—looking to the season ahead—we ask you to become a member supporting these artistic efforts today!
