S U N D A Y S C H O O L: Compost versus soil.

♻️In simplest terms, soil serves to support plant life, while compost enriches the soil itself.

🌱Rich soil can be built by mixing compost, sand, silt, clay, etc. in the right proportions, depending on what kind of soil you want to build.

🪴As organic matter increases within the soil, its structure and porosity is improved leading to a superior plant root environment. By aiding in the increase of soil microorganisms, organic matter buffers the soil pH, making nutrients more readily available for plant uptake while also filtering out contaminants that may exist in the water.

🌱🪴Though different in composition and function, compost and organic soil are dependent upon one another to function at an optimal level, enriching both the soul environment and all that grows from it.

Weeks ago we participated in @friendsmarketindy over @flannerfarms

A truly beautiful night of community, inclusion and connection. And I finally found the perfect opportunity to print and share this amazing zine by @ajhawkinsx and @entertheparlor. We left some at @ujamaacommunitybookstore but they probably need restocked. Get down there and let me know.

Throwback to last week at Purdue’s Small Farm and Horticulture Conference. I could talk compost all day, every day. Especially with these people.

The newly formed Indiana Composting Council (we officially have 501-C3 status!) is only just getting started on all the ways we plan to bring awareness (and LOVE) to the timeless practice of composting.

A BETTER WORLD IS POSSIBLE.

It’s cold out there. We’re still here. Movin scraps and sharing warmth as much as we can.

A thread dedicated to #compostcontamination - a constant challenge for composters.

PLEASE. No plastics. No rubber. No metals. No produce stickers. No bandaids, for sure.

The more we know, the better we do, right??
