House Vermin, 2025

"House Vermin" is a sentimental map of the past. Overseeing its construction is a figure placidly looking over their shoulder, and around which all other figures hover and interact with.
The figure's legs fail to enter the house, only visible through it. They want to
belong, but are rejected. Instead, it is the virus/semen-like elements expelled by
the red figure that successfully inhabit it, akin to vermin.
The house is almost left with just its outline, placing it closer to houses in
children's drawings, which confers it an innocence that contrasts with its cruelty.

Drawing a house has always been an element of simultanous comfort and discomfort. I tend to always draw them the same way, with a little door, windows and a chimney. There's something comforting about a house with a chimney; the smoke exhaled is a sign of presence.

“Poção para Encontrar os Caminhos de Regresso à Infância”

Para a sua belíssima exposição “Ecologia Quotidiana”, apresentada na galeria Alfaia, em Loulé, a Inês convidou-me, tal como convidou a Paula e a Joana, para fazermos uma instalação, mantendo a sua prática colaborativa. Juntas, pensamos em poções que abraçassem o poder transformativo do dia-a-dia - dos objectos, cheiros e memórias que o povoam - e em panelas que dessem forma a estas poções, e assim surgiu a nossa peça colaborativa “Receitas para dias comuns e outras magias”.

“Poção para Encontrar os Caminhos de Regresso à Infância” baseia-se numa memória de infância; a minha avó do coração, como por vezes lhe chamo, por vezes preparava-me um pequeno-almoço que baptizamos de “leitinho na malga”. A receita é simples: leite, pão recesso, café e açúcar. Preparada por qualquer outra pessoa, esta refeição repudiava-me por completo. Só quando preparado por ela se tornava no pequeno-almoço mais delicioso do mundo.

Com base no seu ingrediente principal, o leite, surgiu a ideia de fazer uma malga em forma de mama, e da qual surgissem várias pernas. Pernas inúteis, pernas que não levam a lado nenhum, pernas que aparecem no meu trabalho, um desejo de andar sem saber para onde. Uma malga pequenina, uma malga cujas dimensões são semelhantes à malga da minha infância, uma malga que ainda existe e da qual ainda posso tomar leitinho na malga.

A acompanhar a peça, escrevi um texto e criei uma personagem bruxinha, incorporando humor no trabalho, esse elemento tão presente na minha vida e que, por vezes, escondo. Carla Pedra, a minha personagem, é a possibilidade de incorporar estas curiosidades e interesses no meu trabalho.

The plate on the table is a real, treasured object: it's the plate my granny always uses for me when I have meals at her house. As for the star-birthing creature, it might not always be present at the table.
