2026 - I’ve been sick all year
.
And I’ve still had an incredible time of it. As I try to take so much cold and cough medication so that no one notices.
.
And wow has everything changed in such a positive way. Coaching has really been clicking lately. I feel as if I have elevated during these last few months. And even tho I’m sick I’m still improving. And I hope to continue that trend.
.
As always big shoutout to all my students. I would be nothing without you all and I am so thankful to have the opportunity to teach what I love.
.
Also keeping me on my toes @jarrettbraun_ I couldn’t be more happy that I get to have these types of interactions. This kinda thing just makes me smile, thank you brother. by @infinite.coach

I’m so grateful I sought out the hard things — even when I didn’t understand why.
.
It was a gift in complete disguise.
.
When I was out there running, getting beat up in training, showing up every single day, doing two workouts a day, six days a week… I didn’t know why.
Early-20s Derek didn’t know.
.
But now I do.
.
I suffered then so I could lead today.
And I’m genuinely thankful it was miserable and hard.
.
I’m thankful for the root canals, the broken noses, the concussions — and a long list of other dumb things I had the privilege of going through.
.
Because now, we do things differently.
.
We don’t throw caution to the wind.
We don’t have cliques.
We don’t feed the inexperienced to the experienced just to boost egos.
.
I’m incredibly proud of the way @infinite.maf functions.
I’m proud of our team.
And I’m grateful I get to teach every one of you.
.

Blue belt 🟦

Nothing says discipline and martial arts like a bar promotion, and I wouldn’t of had it any other way. I didn’t know that Dec 20th would be my last day as a white belt, but there it is, end of an era.
.
I started bjj in August of 2020, and I remember thinking to myself, why would anyone pay to do this. But after dying thousands of times, getting absolutely rag dolled, and turning my game into the most mind numbing simple stratedgy of tic tac toe. Bjj is pretty awesome.
.
Looking forward to many more years of being extremely mediocre. Using complete bs techiques, And going for subs that exist to make me laugh.

Before the gym.
Before the lights.

I welded for a living. Long days. Heavy steel. Burnt hands.
Then I trained.

Martial arts wasn’t just hobby to me, it was the way out.

When times get tough, I remember what it was like to struggle, sacrifice and barely get by.
.
I am so thankful for everyone I get to train with.
I am so thankful for this life.

The road from the garden shed to these doors was not triumph, but one of a pilgrimage I never had a choice but to make. My whole life lead me here. Each step was marked by deep uncertainty, walking through instances so painful I survived only by His grace.
