A very British celebration of the life of a global icon has now reached more than 30 million people across global digital platforms.

A military band performing Dolly Parton’s ‘9 to 5’ outside Buckingham Palace is a reminder that the content which travels furthest is seldom the most manufactured. If organisations – and military bands - show audiences something real, others will do the distribution for you. Categorically there was no one like Dolly, a country music legend, a philanthropist and an inspiration to millions.

The tens of millions who have watched the performance of one of her signature tunes by the Changing of the Guard’s military band is both a wonderful tribute and another clear example of the UK’s own soft power in action. No other nation can deliver such a sense of ceremony and few have cultural capital that is so immediately recognisable worldwide.

Earlier this year ING’s latest Most Talked About Cities ranking showed again the outsized role that cultural events and catalysts in particular play in driving city visibility. Few examples illustrate this better the very British celebration of an extraordinary American. by @ingmedia_

What role can cultural partnerships play in shaping a destination’s identity?

This summer, @boroughyards and @tate Modern collaborated on a programme that extended Tate Modern’s “Frida Kahlo: The Making of an Icon” exhibition beyond the museum and into the surrounding neighbourhood.

From exhibition trailer screenings during Summer of Sport and a weekend fiesta with @mexibrits celebrating Frida Kahlo’s hometown of Coyoacán, to an interactive paint-by-numbers installation inspired by her work, the programme created new ways for visitors to engage with the exhibition across Borough Yards.

The collaboration highlights how cultural partnerships can help cultural institutions connect with the places around them. In the case of “Frida Kahlo: The Making of an Icon”, Tate Modern’s highest pre-selling exhibition to date, the Borough Yards programme created new opportunities for audiences to engage with the exhibition beyond the museum.

ING worked with Borough Yards to help shape and deliver the programme as part of a wider effort to strengthen the destination’s cultural positioning and build relationships with neighbouring Bankside organisations contributing to its long-term identity.

Thank you to the teams at Tate Modern, Borough Yards, Better Bankside, Mexibrit, @tfragency and @smart_soho for bringing the programme to life.

Nordic cities have increased their digital visibility by more than 200% over the past five years. But are architects converting that growing attention into influence?

That was one of the questions we explored at Oslo Urban Week, where we brought together leaders from across architecture, landscape and urban design to discuss the findings of ING's latest Architecture Tomorrow report.

Our research shows that cities such as Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki are attracting increasing international attention thanks to their reputation for design, sustainability and quality of life. Yet while architecture contributes strongly to that story, architects are not always capturing a proportionate share of the influence that comes with it.

This became a central theme of the discussion. As Lee Higson observed, architects need a stronger dialogue with politicians and policymakers if they are to play a greater role in shaping the future of cities. The Nordic approach offers valuable lessons in how design expertise can be positioned closer to decision-making.

The conversation reinforced a key conclusion from the report: great design alone is not enough. Influence depends on visibility, trust and the ability to communicate expertise beyond the profession itself.

Thank you to Camilla Heier Anglero, Lee Higson, Louise Fiil Hansen and Marius Hauland Næss for joining the discussion chaired by Rose Marshall-Gibbons, and to everyone who joined us.

Bringing art to the heart of the Square Mile, @bgrelondon has collaborated with the @nationalgallery and @easterncityldn for a curated public display of selected works from the UK’s national collection.

Running for three months, the accessible for all display sees 13 masterpieces by the likes of Thomas Gainsborough and Henri Rousseau reproduced at large scale on the glass façade of 99 Bishopsgate, while the office building is being readied for redevelopment. The display highlights remarkable works of merchants, workers, entrepreneurs and everyday people. It also features several works from across the National Gallery’s collection, some of which are currently not on display in the gallery, offering a rare opportunity to enjoy some of the nation’s favourite paintings up close in an enlarged format.

The collaboration stemmed from a connection made earlier this year at ING’s Innovative Breakfast Club event where we brought together professionals from across the arts, culture and real estate industries to discuss the power of public art as a tool for unlocking investment, attracting footfall, generating economic uplift and long-term placemaking strategies.

The cities getting noticed by investors aren’t necessarily the ones making the most noise.

Our latest research looked at how 70 European cities are being talked about in investment-related coverage and commentary. Stability and infrastructure are becoming much more prominent in the conversation.

References to stability have risen from one in 17 mentions five years ago to one in 10 today. Infrastructure has doubled its share, now appearing in one in five mentions.

That matters because visibility is increasingly tied to what investors can have confidence in. A strong infrastructure base, stability over the long term and a reputation that travels beyond the local market can all help a city stay on the radar.
Munich offers a useful example. It climbed four places in our ranking between 2024 and 2025, making it the third fastest-rising European city for digital visibility.

The shift isn’t simply about which cities are attracting attention. It’s about what is making them worth paying attention to.

That’s a conversation we’ll be continuing at EXPO REAL, as investors and cities consider what creates confidence and where that confidence can translate into opportunity. by @ingmedia_

Manchester climbed five places in this year’s Europe’s Most Talked About Cities rankings. It now sits just outside of the top ten alongside cities such as Vienna, Valencia, Brussels and Amsterdam. But how might that visibility shift and evolve, and importantly, what does Manchester have to do to keep up momentum as a place to invest, visit, work and live?

We brought together a group of Manchester enthusiasts and place leaders to consider how the city’s digital narrative can be used as a strategic asset; what makes Manchester so good at telling its story (and where it needs to improve); and how it can maintain and capitalise on the increased attention of Burnham-mania.

We discussed how far the city and Greater Manchester region have come in the past 30 years, with organisations like Marketing Manchester founded specifically to put the city on the global map. The recent increase in attention is not only down to its recent leadership, but is a legacy of a hard-fought evolution that began with strong foundations and continued with a strong appetite from public and private sectors to collaborate on making it the best it can be for all of its people.

We also touched on where the city might go next, with one participant promising that “Manchester will never be ‘done’”. The fact that everyone in the city buys into the story and the Manchester ‘brand’ is what gives it international recognition. And now everyone else is buying into the brand too.

Thank you to our attendees for a morning of enlightening and thoughtful conversation:

Team ING swapped desks for walking boots this weekend and took on this year’s LanAid Trek across the South Downs. We walked from Hassocks to Brighton (44km) and from Lewes to Brighton (21km) and finished on the seafront under a spectacular sunset.

Together, we have raised more than £3,800 for @landaidcharity and supported its mission to end youth homelessness across the UK. ING has partnered with LandAid for many years and we are proud to have taken part in the Trek again. LandAid brings the property industry together to support charities that provide life‑changing services for young people who are facing homelessness or are at risk of it.

A huge thank you to everyone who walked, donated and cheered the team on. There is still time to support via the link in today’s story.

The future of the built world is being shaped by diverse voices, and we’re honoured to have welcomed an ambitious cohort of founders and leaders to the ING office through the Elevate programme.

Founded by ING to support representation across the built environment, Elevate is a network connecting diverse-led businesses, helping them strengthen their business propositions and profiles, and exchange ideas.

Most recently, we’ve worked with Dhruv Gulabchande and Emily Carter from HFM, Harris Beider from Forward Institute, Sinéad Conneely and Philip Isaac from Simple Works, YaYa and Roy from RC/YYC, and Faith Locken and Daniel Grant from Nomad Labs.

This year’s cohort represents a range of businesses and perspectives, from emerging architecture practices focused on community-led design and public sector projects, to structural engineers committed to creating positive social impact through collaborative design and a new workspace app. It also includes an innovation engine for Birmingham that uses the city as a test bed for tackling challenges faced by urban centres around the world.

A huge thank you to everyone who has joined us this year. We’re excited for more time with you all in the second half of 2026. by @ingmedia_

Excellent news for Helsinki.

The Aalto Works have been inscribed on the @unesco World Heritage List, recognising the global significance of the pioneering work of Aino, Elissa and Alvar Aalto.

With five of the thirteen UNESCO-listed buildings located in Helsinki, the Finnish capital offers one of the best places to experience the Aaltos’ human-centred approach to architecture and design.

The designation is international recognition of an extraordinary architectural legacy, but it is also a powerful example of how cultural assets can strengthen a city’s reputation, create compelling visitor narratives and build meaningful connections with place.

Earlier this year, @helsinki_partners hosted us to explore several of the Aalto Works sites, alongside other landmarks that showcase the city’s remarkable design heritage. What stood out was not just the architecture itself, but how effectively Helsinki has woven design into its wider destination story and identity.

ING is helping to raise the profile of Helsinki as one of the world’s great architecture and design cities, and this UNESCO recognition marks an important moment in strengthening that international narrative.

Congratulations to everyone involved including Hanna Harris, @alvaraaltofoundation, Jukka Savolainen, Johanna Tolonen and Minna Sauramaa.
