Before we get to that shoe you eventually will find in the shop, there is a bit of trial and error in the making. Salmon is the main contributor to Norwegian seafood exports. In 2023, Norway exported 1.2 million tonnes of salmon! This means that there’s also a lot of salmon skin available, but so far there are only a few companies turning it into material for a value chain. . The clothing brand @fogggildeskal saw the potential for a footwear colab, and teamed up with @kastelshoes as the established shoe brand with expertise, @norskinmaterials as the material producer, and myself as the shoe designer, supported by @doganorway . This project has been put on hold, due to the lack of finances for getting it through to production. We don’t usually share work in progress, but decided to make an exception. The finale design will look different, and hopefully reach the market some day. . Here is a peek into my studio when busy, and my hans-on design process. Working with materials and assembling several prototypes, is teaching me a lot about how materials behaves, and how it can work in production of several pairs in different sizes. Not as easy as it looks. We have also been testing seaweed based foam from @agoprene as padding material, and visited ‘Salmon Centre Gildeskål.’ . This is the logo I designed for ArktiskMat, on Espen’s arm. Espen is that guy from my home-town (Mosjøen) who is completely nuts! (but in the best way) Espen is ArktiskMat’s executive potato (including audio, visual, transportation, sound, light, interpretation, guiding, MC, hosting, party organiser, matchmaker, head of plan B and C, special effects and much more) Irreplaceable. . He is always supportive of my work, and I think this tattoo is the biggest compliment I got as a designer! . I designed the logo in 2015. I also share a page from my old notebook, showing that this could have been so much worse.. . The chosen logo is inspired by a plant that grows in the nordic mountains and forests, called cloudberry. The logo includes a heart to express the love for food.. nature. And it is also the sun- or more specific the midnight sun. . An experience for the senses! . This leather is the up-cycled by-product of the dairy and meat industry. Here are some pictures showing the process, and the hard work it takes turning the raw hides into high quality leather by the very skillful people at @lederfabrik_heinen . I think it’s important to communicate the true cost of materials, and the work and skills behind. As a reminder to invest in quality - so that animals can live well when they live and tanneries can invest in modern machinery, green power and water cleaning systems, such as Heinen does. .
