Salmon is the main contributor to Norwegian seafood exports. In 2023, Norway exported 1.2 million tonnes of salmon! This means that there’s also a lot of salmon skin available, but so far there are only a few companies turning it into material for a value chain. . The clothing brand @fogggildeskal saw the potential for a footwear colab, and teamed up with @kastelshoes as the established shoe brand with expertise, @norskinmaterials as the material producer, and myself as the shoe designer, supported by @doganorway . This project has been put on hold, due to the lack of finances for getting it through to production. We don’t usually share work in progress, but decided to make an exception. The finale design will look different, and hopefully reach the market some day. . Here is a peek into my studio when busy, and my hans-on design process. Working with materials and assembling several prototypes, is teaching me a lot about how materials behaves, and how it can work in production of several pairs in different sizes. Not as easy as it looks. We have also been testing seaweed based foam from @agoprene as padding material, and visited ‘Salmon Centre Gildeskål.’ . Also, thanks to @yulia_fish_official for great insights! It usually takes years from idea to finish product when it comes to footwear design. . I have been lucky to have one of my favourite photographers - @saraangelica capture the vibe and some work behind the scenes at my studio.

After a short break we continue with posting results from our Loco for Local summer course. Ingrid Brandth is a very experienced designer of athletic and outdoor footwear and she has just opened her own design and prototyping studio in Oslo, Norway. She came to Footwearology Lab to improve her 3D design skills and to learn new technologies like knitting and 3D printing to take her work to the next level. And she sure succeeded in doing that! Ingrid is an excellent maker, and you can see how this helps in creating designs that are both beautiful, sustainable and push the boundaries of technology. She started designing and printing her last in 3D and then made a simple upper pattern just from the yellow microfiber cloth you use for cleaning, proving that you can make a prototype out of absolutely anything. In our knitting classes she learned about the need for pivot lines; these are the diagonal lines that appear when the knitting machine must make a turn in the design to make it 3D. These are the diagonal lines you see in socks, right before the ankle and we also need them in footwear uppers. Instead of seeing these lines as a nuisance, she decided to use them as a design element, creating a pattern that literally evolves around pivot lines, inspired by Spanish fans. It pushed our knitting master Jordi Montaner to the limits, but the result is amazing! She even used the tiny holes in the pivot lines to put in small 3D printed loops for the laces. Ingrid often designs shoes for very different terrains, so she had collected images of rugged terrains to use in her sole design. Our in-house Grasshopper expert Luis Bugin helped her create a parametric texture out of an image of rocks, which she could then apply to the bottom of her sole. Are you inspired by Ingrid's approach? We will be teaching some making courses in the future together with Ingrid, so stay tuned for those! #sneakercraft #sneakermaking #parametricdesign #shoesaddict #fortytwoandahalf #sneakers #sneakerhead #conceptkicks #3dgrasshopper #nicekicks #sneakerheads #kickstagram #solecollector #kicksonfire #hypebeast #sneakerheads #sneakerdesign #flyknit #nikeflyknit #primeknit #3dknitting #knitted
