For Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re spotlighting projects that promote mental wellbeing. In 2020, @easyactivism raised $50K to provide one month of free therapy to 200 Black people and pay BIPOC therapists.

They used their existing connections and knowledge to spread the word about their project and hold folks accountable when they expressed interest in contributing. Soon, they were seeing an overwhelmingly positive response. As donations came in, they were also reaching out to therapy networks and negotiating packages they could provide to folks who were interested in the therapy.

They made sure the services were as inclusive as possible. “We have everything from LGBTQIA+, to traditional talk therapy, to more holistic meditation approaches–just so we have something for every type of person,” says Stephanie, one of the project leaders.

Mental health is a community effort and these project leaders prove the power of coming together to process and heal ❤️ by @inourbackyards

May is Mental Health Awareness Month — a moment to de-stigmatize anxiety, depression, PTSD, OCD, and more. It is also a chance to learn how they impact our loved ones and communities, and imagine a world that supports, celebrates, and uplifts all people.

This month, we’re feeling particularly inspired by Youth Self Care Day, an initiative launched in Detroit that aims to shatter stigma and foster open dialogues about mental well-being. It’s an annual summer day dedicated to providing resources, services, and activities that support the mental, emotional, and social aspects of youth and their parents. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, July 27 2024 from 11am-6pm!

Youth Self Care Day is part of ioby’s Detroit Match Program, which matches up to $2,000 in donations for projects led by Detroiters, for Detroiters. by @inourbackyards

A few more stills from our staff retreat, where we asked everyone to doodle one image that represents who they are—a flower, a sunrise, a patch of grass? It was important to have a moment of quiet reflection during the energy (and yes, intensity!) of seeing coworkers IRL for the first time in months. How do you make space for reflection during large group gatherings? by @inourbackyards

In celebration of Earth Month, we’re returning to some of our favorite climate-conscious projects crowd-funded on ioby! Los Angeles is known for many things: Hollywood, beautiful beaches, and yes…cars. This has led to some of the worst air pollution in the United States, which has caused a cascade negative environmental and health impacts. But what if it doesn’t have to be this way?

Like the name suggests, Walk this Way LA helped South LA residents to rely less on their cars by understanding how long it would take to walk between different popular destinations. The activists found that many people in LA choose not to walk because they don’t know how long it will take to get between destinations. As they write, “studies have shown that just the simple act of translating “miles” to “minutes” is enough to encourage walkers to make a trip on foot.”

To encourage more walking, they created colorful signage they placed across South Los Angeles that made it clear how long it would take to walk to different places. They made it (literally) clear that L.A. didn’t have to be a city exclusively dominated by cars! by @inourbackyards
