On January 30, 2024, a summit co-hosted by the White House Domestic Policy Council and the National Endowment for the Arts — “Healing, Bridging, Thriving: A Summit on Arts and Culture in our Communities” shared insights and explored opportunities for arts to be integrated across national, state-wide, and municipal efforts to improve the health and well-being of individual and communities, invigorate physical spaces, fuel democracy, and foster equitable outcomes.

The day before, an Arts and Health Pre-Summit Caucus convened leaders at the NEA in Washington D.C. to discuss opportunities to move from ideas to action in translating the evidence we have for the health benefits of the arts and arts therapies into tangible, meaningful, and accessible opportunities for engagement.

The caucus was designed and led by Lab co-director Dr. Nisha Sajnani (NYU Steinhardt), Dr. Jill Sonke (UFCAM), and Dr. Lisa Wong (Harvard) with technical support from Sunil Iyengar (NEA)

Sometimes we need to take a moment to truly celebrate.

What started out as a meaningful, yet smaller intention with our Community Sew-A-Thon has turned into SEW much more, thanks to the incredible partnerships and participation that makes this all possible.

It begins with our generous @inourbackyards campaign donors and their belief in us scaling up our Sew-A-Thon. Little did we know how much the scale up would be???

Enter, St. Vincent Charity @stvincentcharity and their vision serving the Cental community for 170 years. Despite the incredibly difficult reality of having to close their inpatient services, they choose to reclaim and repurpose the drapery- laundering and drycleaning - an expense that most modern day institutions wouldn’t even consider under the circumstances. Further, reaching out to an organization like ours to transform the materials into reusable tote bags to benefit community members and the environment, a major wheel 🛞 or should we say bobbin - 🧵was put into motion. 😆

Enter our @jcu_cssa student volunteers that began meticulously weighing and measuring every piece of drapery material (actually I think we pulled a couple for samples-but close enough!) Thanks to the generosity of @nationalsafetyapparel - they donated industrial cutting tables to make this process far more manageable. Can we believe this project alone diverts 654 lbs. of material from the landfill?!! 🎉♻️

Thanks to the @awesomefound #cle - we purchased a new industrial serger that will greatly improve our production capacity for the Sew-A-Thon and our programs going forward!

Now, this is where YOU come in!!! Through our participatory model of social manufacturing, we are going to cut and sew reusable bags for St. Vincent’s Mission Kitchen + Pantry program! The best part is social manufacturing makes room for everyone at the table, sewists and non-sewists! Join us on Saturday, May 4th, as we transform this material in the place of its origin to be given back to the community!
