This being my first time interviewing a teacher, the first question I asked her was slightly cheeky, “What sort of student were you in school?” I got a warm smile and she replied, “I studied hard, always came in the top three of my class.” Having heard this, the remainder of my questions seemed a tad pointless. But as the conversation flowed freely, I learned a lot about this formidable and determined lady.

In honour of his hundredth birthday in October 2026, Sangeetha Shinde sits down with him and his daughter, Sunaina Mathews, to discover the stories behind the legend.

There are some lives that cannot be measured merely in years. They are measured instead in journeys undertaken, hardships overcome, lives touched and memories created. The life of Dr (Lt Col Retd) Trilok S Chhabra is one such story. Born on October 2, 1926, in Sialkot, now part of Pakistan, Dr Chhabra has witnessed a century of history unfold before his eyes as of today. He has lived through the British Raj, the trauma of Partition, the birth of independent India, wars, social change and technological revolutions. Through it all, he has remained remarkably grounded, guided by a deep sense of duty, service and gratitude.

A Sense of Belonging

I first came to the Nilgiris over three decades ago, a visitor with no idea that these hills would one day become home. Like most tourists, I arrived wide-eyed, drawn by the quiet beauty, the rolling tea gardens, the cool air that seemed to slow time itself. I left with memories, not knowing that the mountains had already begun their quiet work on me.

Years later, I returned as a student. That visit turned into a relationship, and over time, into a belonging. What began as admiration slowly deepened into connection. About seventeen years ago, I came back again, this time as a faculty member, and since then, my ties to the Nilgiris have only grown stronger.

Another Life

High in the blue folds of the Nilgiri Hills, where mist drifts across rolling grasslands and eucalyptus trees perfume the cold air, lives a community many travellers believe they already understand. Visitors arrive with cameras and curiosity, convinced they are about to witness something ancient and unchanged. They notice the distinctive shawls embroidered by Toda women, the sacred buffaloes grazing beside winding hill roads, and the small barrel-vaulted temples resting quietly against the slopes. They capture smiles, dances and stillness, then leave believing they have seen the Toda people.
