A visual reminder of why it’s important - particularly with vintage watches - to rinse salt water off your watch after swimming in the sea, and to regularly clean sweat and dirt from your watch.

Pitting, caused by corrosion from salt water and sweat can have a significant impact on the water resistance capability of the watch, leading to costly repairs or in extreme situations, replacement cases required.

When a watchmaker’s Apple Watch dies, disassembling it seems the right thing to do

Not sure I’m getting it working again. I’ll take a grand complication service over this any day 😆

There’s nothing quite like the elegant simplicity of a gold hunter pocket watch with a white enamel dial

Modern mechanical watches have shock protection on the balance pivots, but this was not always so!

A hard knock or drop to many older watches could nearly guarantee a broken balance staff.

Fortunately turning a balance staff on a lathe is a skill still being taught to watchmakers, meaning it’s normally possible to get vintage wrist or pocket watches running again.

You have to hold a Jaquet Droz in your hands to fully appreciate the artistry involved in creating the birds on the dial. Unrivalled craftsmanship!

A look inside a Corum Minute Repeater wristwatch during a recent repair

Have a close look and you can see the counting racks that keep track of the hours and minutes that need to be sounded off on the gongs

A little more from yesterday’s visit to @stpaulscathedrallondon clock.

Focusing here on the clock’s double three-legged gravity escapement and the two second pendulum. Note the seconds hand jumping in two second increments.

Only part of which is visible here as the pendulum rod is 14 feet long.

It doesn’t get much more “Inside Horology” than a visit to the clock room at @stpaulscathedrallondon

An incredible experience getting a behind the scenes look at one of the most significant turret clocks in the world.

When there’s no parts available for a vintage watch, hand making them is always an option.

Here is a yoke from a keyless setting mechanism being shaped using a file then grain finished mounted in pith.
