At the track with @insidelineengineering doing some aero testing and dialing in the @ridesync Aerobar 03 TT extensions

The ipad says we got a bit faster, we’ll find out for sure at 70.3 Boise in 2.5 weeks. The bike definitely got a bit sexier though.

Flappy jacket in the wind? It helped you go faster…. What!?
Following your intuition and zipping up your jacket. Well, it made you slower. We tested it.

Same rider. Same bike. Same track. Two configurations: jacket fully zipped vs. jacket fully open.

The result surprised us:
→ Zipped: CdA 0.356 m² → Open: CdA 0.344 m² → Difference: ~10 W at 40 kph in favor of open

That’s roughly 30 seconds over a 40 km TT — by unzipping a zipper.

Why? A zipped jacket is a closed bag. Air enters through the collar, sleeves, and hem and has nowhere to vent. The fabric pressurizes and balloons outward across your shoulders and back. You’ve added frontal area and made the surface rougher. Open the zip and the jacket vents through the front, lays back against your body, and stops behaving like a parachute.

The message isn’t “always ride with your jacket open.” A tight aero jacket sized to fit will go the other direction — zipped beats open. Plus some days, it’s just cold and wet, especially here in the PNW. The message is that intuition is a bad way to choose race-day kit.

Do you want informed, data driven optimization of your own set up? That’s what we do at Inside Line Engineering - DM us and let’s make you faster. taken in Jerry Baker Memorial Velodrome by @insidelineengineering

Can you spot the difference between these two photos?

The answer is ‘turtling’. Or the ‘shoulder shrug’. We can tell you that from left to right, there are sufficient gains to be had!

The ability to change and hold an aerodynamically optimized body position is crucial. In this case, turtling has enabled the following:

1. Lower head position by 40mm
2. Reduced frontal area
3. Decreased gap between the head and hands.

Swipe to see more —>

What has this achieved?

1. Reduction in CdA of 0.026
2. Achieve the same speed using 21.2W less
3. Over a 40km TT at 25mph, saving 2mins 22seconds
4. Free speed - This is achieved without equipment changes

Sunny spring aero testing session with @wjboh who’s ready to smash some stage race TTs this season at the likes of @tourdebloom and @baker_city_cycling.

We spent time dialing in cockpit position and testing some different helmets to make educated choices, optimizing for incremental speed 🚴🏼‍♂️💨

At ILE we have multiple helmets available to try out and see what works for you. Get in contact to get aero! taken in Jerry Baker Memorial Velodrome by @insidelineengineering

The ILE crew got after it racing @tempusfugitivetimetrials 10 mile TT in the freezing temperatures 🥶

Setting baselines early this season, it can only go up from here 📈

David took 🥈in the TT bike category, Ryan took 🥈 in the Road bike category.

Need help optimizing your bike position so you can crush the season ahead? ⬇️
