🔔📩 We asked. The Ministry responded. 💜

At Inspire Dance Challenge, looking out for our dancers means caring about both their opportunities on stage and their education.

When Ontario announced changes to school attendance and participation for 2026–27, questions arose about how students attending competitive dance events—particularly on Thursdays and Fridays—could be affected.

Rather than make assumptions, Inspire wrote directly to the Ontario Ministry of Education for clarification.

We have now received an official response from the Ministry’s Curriculum, Assessment and Student Success Policy Branch.

The Ministry confirmed:

“The intent is that students are not negatively impacted when they are absent for valid reasons and those absences are appropriately excused.”

The Ministry also confirmed that under Ontario Regulation 298, s.23(3), a parent/guardian may submit a written request to the principal asking that a student be excused for a specified period.

Their response specifically identifies “non-school-related sporting events or activities” among the circumstances for which a parent may request an excused absence.

The principal must approve the request for the absence to be considered excused.

💜 To help our families, Inspire has created a Parent/Guardian Student Absence Request Letter explaining the nature and educational benefits of competitive dance and verifying participation in an Inspire event.

Parents should submit the request in advance and work with their school to ensure students remain current with their academic responsibilities.

We remain advocates for kids and their whole educational experience

📄 Download the Parent Absence Request Letter and read the Ministry guidance:

Approval remains at the student's principal's discretion, in accordance with applicable Ministry and school-board policies.
