Swimming outside in the sunlight always takes me back to swim practices when I was hypnotized by the light dancing across the bottom of the pool ✨

The lighting 😻

@asiabrynne @bryannabradleyphotography and I got together for our annual friends-shooting-friends-shooting shoot 😹

Asia mentioned the shoreline was insanely clear and while they were tangling with a tako, I swam there. The waves had to be all of 6” high but that was enough to bend the light underwater in all the best ways 🪩 by @instaclamfunk

How does primate behavior change when you put one male on an otherwise all-female surf trip?

In the latest Adventure Journal, I traveled to remote BC and wrote a story about just that, weaving @robert.sapolsky landmark baboon study throughout it.

Here’s the gist of the study.

In the mid-1980s, Dr. Robert M. Sapolsky, a primatologist living in Kenya, documented an unprecedented cultural shift when he noticed that the alpha males of a baboon population suddenly vanished.

The alphas had come upon a garbage dump near a tourist lodge, and they defended their spoils furiously from low-ranking males and females, who were relegated to leaves, seeds, and insects on the forest floor.

One day, in the East African heat, the alphas were exposed to tainted meat at the dump, infecting them with bovine tuberculosis. They died soon after. Left behind were 62 baboons. The males were among those who had been too subordinate to try dump brawling, as well as the females—who now outnumbered males two to one. The change in demographics resulted in a new code of conduct. The males began to use affection and mutual grooming rather than threats. They huddled closer together. And while the new alphas still battled each other for hierarchy, they ceased to harass low-ranking males and females alike. But perhaps most surprisingly, when alphas from other troops wandered into what Sapolsky later coined as the Forest Troop, they assimilated to this new Burning Man-like culture rather than regress to standard aggressive behavior.

“We don’t yet understand the mechanism of transmittal,” Dr. Sapolsky told the New York Times, “but the jerky new guys are obviously learning, ‘We don’t do things like that around here.’”

Ever since the tuberculosis epidemic killed the alpha males, the ratio has remained skewed, with about twice as many females as males. More than 30 years later, their offspring still maintain this genial social ethos.
