GLOBAL HEALTH🚨
More and more, we are realizing just how interconnected we are with natural habitats and their wildlife. An unhealthy environment affects its flora and fauna — including us, humans — and vice versa. That's why we need to approach health from a global perspective, considering all the other living beings that share the same environment as us.
In our research, we apply Global Health concepts because tapirs are SENTINEL SPECIES. This means that if a tapir is sick and/or contaminated, the environment and other living beings in that same area may also be exposed. This was the case in the Cerrado of Mato Grosso do Sul, where our studies detected agrochemical and metal contamination in tapirs. Following these findings, we collected samples from humans living in the same area and found these contaminants in them as well.
Nature is made up of interconnected networks of interactions. That's why talking about conservation also means talking about health. We therefore emphasize the importance of a holistic approach that encompasses the environment, flora, and fauna — both wildlife and domestic animals.
