The exhibition IN/SU/LA 24/25 has arrived in Rome! After a wonderful first stop at @hoto_gallery in Berlin, we are excited that the second opening took place at @materia_gallery_rome , where the works will be on view until July 18, 2025. 🇮🇹✨

Postcards rom the 2024 Ventotene Residency

As summer unfolds, we are delighted to unveil the outcomes of the 2024 IN/SU/LA residency, which brought together a group of twelve artists - among them represented artists Giuseppe De Mattia and Joachim Lenz - for an immersive stay on the island of
Ventotene during the previous season.

IN/SU/LA has, for several years, brought artists to the historically significant island of Ventotene, Italy – a place deeply rooted in the European ideas of community and solidarity. The 2024 edition focused on exchange and artistic engagement with the history
of Europe, the spirit of the island, and questions of identity, belonging, and the future.

The resulting works were exhibited in May at Galerie HOTO Berlin (@hoto_gallery) and a presentation focused on the postcards produced is showcased at Matèria from July 3rd until July 18, 2025.

The project is accompanied by a catalogue featuring texts by Verena Osthoff (@verenaosthoff) and Marc Wellmann (@marcwellmann), as well as photographs by
Kseniya Apresian (@k.apresian), offering deeper insights into the artistic processes and
the island’s history.

🔸 IN/SU/LA 24/25 🔸
The residency series IN/SU/LA has, for several years, brought artists to the historically significant island of Ventotene, Italy – a place deeply rooted in the European ideas of community and solidarity. The 2024/2025 edition focused on exchange and artistic engagement with the history of Europe, the spirit of the island, and questions of identity, belonging, and the future.

Yvonne Andreini studied at Kunsthochschule Berlin Weißensee with a focus on drawing with Prof. Hanns Schimansky. She graduated in his master class 2010.

Andreini lives and works in Berlin.

Wie Darsteller auf einer Bühne agieren die Objekte in den Bildern. Als Teil einer Inszenierung wirbeln sie die Gesetzmäßigkeiten zwischen Raum, Subjekt und Zeit auf.
Ausgehend von gegenständlichen Motiven, wie inszenierten Stillleben sowie Bildern von Situationen, in denen Menschen zusammenkommen, verarbeitet Yvonne Andreini diese in mehreren Schichten und Arbeitsprozessen miteinander und abstrahiert sie immer mehr bis hin zu einem Netz von Rhythmen.
Große Pinselstriche verflechten sich mit geschwungenen Linienflächen zu dichten, schwebenden Strukturen.
Auf der Suche nach dem Geist der Dinge erwachen die ursprünglichen Situationen in lebendigen Stillleben.

The objects in Andreini’s paintings behave like actors on a stage. As part of this theatrical play, they stir up the laws between space, subject and time.

Starting with figurative motives, such as staged still lifes or pictures of situations in which people come together, Yvonne Andreini processes these in several layers, increasingly abstracting them until they become rhythmic network.
Large brushstrokes intertwine with curved linear surfaces to create dense, floating structures.
In search of the spirit of things, the initial situations awake in vibrant still lifes.

Michael Kunze,studierte zwischen 1985 und 1991 an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste München. Er lebt in Berlin.

Michael Kunze folgt mit seiner Arbeit einer „Schattenlinie“ der Moderne. Nach seiner Darstellung trennten sich zum Ende des 19. Jhdts. zwei diametral entgegengesetzte Auffassungsweisen voneinander: Die eine begann etwa mit Paul Cézanne, setzte sich im Kubismus und dem hierauf folgenden Avantgardereigen fort
und suggeriert bis hin zur Minimal und Concept Art der 70er Jahre des 20. Jhdts. eine scheinbar historisch folgerichtige, linear verständliche und „fortschrittliche“ Moderne. Diese von Kunze so genannte „amtliche“ Moderne wird bis heute nach Schulbuch als die einzig gültige Erzählung gelehrt, die ein Zeitalter voller Spannungen und Umbrüche von sich selbst entworfen hat. Im Gegensatz hierzu begann Kunzes „Schattenlinie“ etwa mit Cezannes antipodischem Zeitgenossen Arnold Böcklin, setzte sich fort mit der Pittura Metafisica eines Giorgio de Chirico, dann mit verschiedenen Spielarten des Surrealismus, und kam dann in der 2. Hälfte des 20. Jhdts. vor allem im europäischen Film der 60er und 70er Jahre zu einer nochmaligen Blüte (Bunuel, Antonioni, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Ingmar Bergman, Werner Herzog, Tarkowski, Fellini etc. – und heute wieder Lars von Trier).

Nikolaus List invites us to focus on the tension between the trees, their branches and their splendour. The artist opens up a space in which we can admire, linger, contemplate, rest and feel safe.
Observations of nature in the Berlin area and Märkische Schweiz are a strong influence on his work.
List is concerned with human perception and depicts his fantastic worlds with not only painting but also computer animation.

Katarina Alamat Kusijanovic is a contemporary visual artist and a
trained restorer from Dubrovnik. Her work possesses an exquisite
sensibility for the recognizable urbanism of her own hometown, its
rich history and especially its art. In her works she creates dynamic
textual-visual amalgams of sorts, forcing the recipients to constantly
balance between reading and observation focused on a purely visual
dimension. She majored in easel painting restoration and conservation
and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Split in 2004.
