Carrying weight over the miles seems straight forward, until you start doing it. Rucking and hiking gets plenty of attention but usually exists on mamy assumptions.

Check the patreon this month, a series on Hoofing It and how to begin a healthy trainup up rucking is coming! by @integratedskillsgroup

I end up behind the wheel of quite a lot of stuff in my wageslave gig. This week so far I've worked with the owners of am 812 Superfast, 911 GTS, Hummer EV, Genadier, Land Cruiser, Continental GT, and more. I've also worked with just students and moms in their Honda and Toyota compact SUVs.

I've inspected or appraises about 25,000 rides over the last dozen years. Have I learned a couple lessons? You bet.

1. ROI on vehicles is low. They're cool, they're undoubtedly cool, but they're not worth going broke for. As a lifestyle, they're an expensive hobby that requires gas, brakes, and tires to utilize.

2. Older is better. Value-wise, they're at the bottom of their depreciatiom curve. But also, the maintenance is cheaper, the electronic nannies are less, and certain older eras of certain makes are just better cars. Mercedes in the 90s,Toyota in the 00's, etc.

3. Skill investment has diminished returns very quickly. A couple autocross events will bestow a great amount of skill and knowledge for dodging an emergency in your daily life. Lots of track time is a great recreational experience but it's hardly applicable on a crowded interstate or on your daily commute.

Overall, my professional advice for any ISG reader is to get something with ground clearance and easy maintenance. Get something 10-20 years old and put great tires on it. The average car payment in America just broke $800/mo this year. That's a vampire on your financial life. 4Runners, Tahoes, and Discovery II's. by @integratedskillsgroup

DETECTION

"The version of this subject that circulates most widely trains vigilance and calls it awareness. Watch for the same car twice, notice the man who looks out of place, trust the feeling in your stomach. A system built that way fires constantly, and the person running it learns within a month to stop listening to it. Alarms that go off every day become background noise, and background noise is the same as no alarm at all.

Working detection is structured. It rests on the understanding that an observer has a problem of his own, which is staying with you while remaining unremarkable, and that you control the conditions under which he has to solve it. Every deliberate thing you do that makes staying with you harder forces a choice between losing you and doing something a normal person would never do. Detection is the practice of engineering that choice and then watching to see which way it goes.

That is a discipline you run on purpose, at a time you select, with a question you formed in advance. Running it because something felt wrong produces a result shaped by what you already believed when you started."

See, hide, reach.

The third installment of the Modern Guerrilla publishes today, and it's where the real meat and potatoes starts. In the previous sections it laid the context out and described the philosophy. This one digs into the "what do you do about it?"

If you've been reading the series so far, drop a comment, let us know what you think. If you're curious about what people have been messaging us about, drop a month into the Reader tier on Patreon.

Even if you cancel right away, we leave all our articles up forever. You can read this and, quite literally, everything else for that one $10 charge.

This was originally a three part series, but the subject ballooned on us. Stay tuned for part four. by @integratedskillsgroup
