Why Ukraine Isn’t the Best Blueprint for Training

Ukraine is a great source of lessons but not a universal template. Some lessons demonstrated from the war are the importance of drones, the value of ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance), electronic warfare challenges, and others.

Ukraine also exists under conditions that are not universally present, such as large scale mobilization, massive artillery employment, extensive minefields, near peer adversaries, and continuous industrial scale replacement. This is a combination that most western conflicts would not have all simultaneously. The next war rarely looks identical to the last one.

The most important lessons from Ukraine for small groups are that a 4-12 or even 20 man team cannot win an attritional contest against a larger force. Historically, successful small units survive through information, mobility, reconnaissance, surprise, and initiative. All of these are key components to maneuver warfare.

The war has encouraged some large misconceptions that all future warfare will resemble a static drone covered trench line. In the US and most of the West, the conditions are quite different, with the geography rewarding movement, infrastructure built to move people and supplies rapidly across enormous distances, military organizations trained around combined arms, tempo, and initiative, the politics around rewarding decisive outcomes, and the logical conclusion of today’s technology in the West being able to process information quickly leading to conditions set for faster maneuver.

Small groups do not possess the manpower necessary to win wars of attrition, and will only survive and succeed by moving, adapting, disrupting, and forcing larger opponents to react. For most groups, this is the most realistic framework through which to understand, train for, and think about future conflict.

𝙊𝙣 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙐𝙨𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝘿𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙨 - 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙚𝙪𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙫𝙨 𝘼𝙩𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣

A common question is “What exactly are drones for?” Obviously with the massive amount of drone footage coming out of Ukraine, we see them being used primarily as weapons. FPV strikes, loitering munitions, reconnaissance drones that are often employed to destroy personnel, vehicles, and equipment while creating persistent surveillance and kill zones.

This is an attrition focused approach, which is to wear the enemy down over time through continuous pressure and cumulative losses.

The other way to view drones is in the maneuver warfare lens, which is that they’re not primarily weapons, they’re information gathering systems.

A key use for drones in the MW context would be to find an unguarded route around an enemy defense that will contribute more to victory than using that drone to score a single kill.

Maneuver warfare is largely objective driven, focused on capturing terrain, securing areas, gathering intelligence, conducting raids, and maintaining operational freedom.

The most effective drone enabled force is usually the one that uses them to improve awareness, coordination, and decision making rather than relying on them solely for lethal effects.

Drones shouldn’t replace maneuver, they should be used to enable maneuver. While this can be in the form of a sort of “armed overwatch,” and delivering a strike to cover the maneuver force, the primary focus of drones, especially in the context of the armed citizen, should be to see things first, understand first, decide first, and help you act first.

The force that does all of that will gain the initiative and control the battlespace

Yeah, we're ditching the white border. A carryover from my hipster photog stage I think we can drop.

I'm only 100 pages into this one but I can already tell that I like it. In keeping with my brethren at the Integrated Skills Group, we celebrate the common generalist W.

It's also good motivational material for the late bloomer whose eclectic experience results in quick gains to new fields as a result of their analogous abilities bestowed by breadth. Old dogs do learn new tricks.

I'll report back again when I'm done and the site launches. We should be ready by August! You can catch my follow up in the blog section.
