Maggie Wang’s capstone project, Sympnoia, has been awarded first prize in the National Design Competition for student and faculty work from Chinese universities. This competition, organized by the TEA Community, which promotes New Media Education, received over 3,000 entries from applicants across China.
Sýmpnoia is an interactive immersive installation where participants’ breathing controls soft inflatable sculptures, light, and sound in real time through biofeedback sensing. By transforming breath into a shared sensory experience, the project explores synchronisation, nonverbal communication, and collective presence between strangers.

Starting in week seven, we will hold a series of talks every Wednesday to showcase the research and practice of IMA Faculty and Teaching Associates (TAs). Meet Changbai Li @dotcli also joining us as a new Teaching Associate.

Changbai is a maker and AI researcher who recently graduated from Oregon State University with an MS double majoring in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. As an artist and maker, his work focuses on the study and application of play, improvisation and hacking. Xiangrui is a game developer and creative technologist based in Shanghai. She holds a master’s degree from New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program and currently works as a technical artist in the game industry.

Ziwei Ji is a new media artist and creative technologist who graduated from NYU ITP in 2023. She draws inspiration from multiple disciplines and reimagines the discoveries through new media. She makes kinetic sculptures, interactive installations, zines, and more.
