It was with great sadness we learnt this evening of the passing of Dónal Lunny. Dónal played on three tracks on the eponymous 1995 debut album from interference lending his extraordinary skills to ‘Breaking Out’, ‘Cain & Abel’ and the sublime ‘Rosemarie’. A long time friend to us all, his invaluable advice and guidance has always been welcome, our world will be a little quieter without him. Our deepest condolences to Oisín, Cora, Sora and Úna. by @interference.official

@glenhansard performing ‘The Cross’ in @firstavenue Minneapolis on 5th August 2014. When in the Purple One’s hometown ye just gotta do a Prince number. A throwback to the days of the Blotto Brothers doing this same song at full flight with their dual takamines broken strings and stomping boots, a highlight of appearances in McDaids, The Bailey and Grafton Street.
Accompanying GH on the night are Joe Doyle on bass, Rob Bochnik on electric guitar, Graham Hopkins on drums and Justin Carroll on piano. (Curtis Fowlkes made an appearance that night too on the old trombone). A rarity to capture as Glen rarely if ever played this song after we lost Mic, he said he couldn’t do it right without him.

@cm_ny_dublin Another great Glen story to go with this great song.
American Townland was written about 30 years ago by Fergus O’Farrrell & Malcom Mc Clancy of the legendary Irish band @interference.official .

🎵American townland snow and Iceland
Russian farmland and the sword of Islam
State of New Israel remembers Belsen
Now the sand for Palestine is the grass for Israel
So won’t you settle down
Stop fighting for your gods
They can’t hear you now
Not with the noise of your guns (bombs) …🎵

“I love the fact that I had to defend this song …”

@evajacksonmusic’s first @theframesofficial gig was in utero, and when I met her, she was three. That night in 2007, Glen pulled her on stage for a wee dance during Banana Man (her then-favourite song), and after the show chased her in circles with banana muffins stuffed in his cheeks. She’s been an incredible singer all her life, but just before starting college a few years ago, we were together in San Francisco when she told him she wanted to do something in music, but *behind* the scenes. Maybe he was as skeptical as I was, because the next night in Sonoma, he called her on stage to sing. It was pure magic, and right after that, she switched her major to performance! Always changing lives, that Hansard!

After all these years, this is our first time singing together. What a joy. Thank you Eva, my favourite California songbird, for being a part of this night for our dear departed friend.

It was meaningful to me also to sing the @interference.official song Gold, a love song to the environment, here in Altadena. Many here love their land but are being forced to sell after losing their homes in the Eaton Fire.

All proceeds from our night for Glen went to @altadenamusicians, who are providing instruments to those who lost theirs in the LA fires, and also providing this wonderful community space, to keep us connected and our spirits alight.

Many thanks to @jaredburtonmusic, @daniel.brummel, @altadenamusiccenter and all our contributing artists (Daniel, Eva, @hairyfur, @ryvosika10, @susanmohinikane, Corey Fogel, Jeremy Forman, @kevinsandbloom, and @springowls), for helping me pull this event off!

✨💫✨

After Glen’s gig at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, we all ended up gathered in a pub around the corner.

Many pints.
Many laughs.
Catching up with old friends.

And, as per usual, a guitar and songs started making their way around the room.

Glen stood up in the corner on the bar bench along the wall and sang @interference.official
“Dark Days.”

One of my favorite songs he would cover on special occasions. ❤️

The singing and those extra,
very off-key “ohhh’s" aren’t mine.
But some of the giggles definitely are.
🤭
Pretty sure, if I remember correctly, someone was deliberately singing off-key during the singalong just to make us all laugh.

Which is kind of ridiculous because this song is so hauntingly beautiful and serious.

And yet, for whatever reason, none of us could quite contain ourselves.
(Maybe it was the Guinness)

There was a lot of laughter.
A lot of music.
And, naturally, a lot of Guinness flowing around that room.
✨💫✨

Looking back, it’s the imperfect little moments like this that become the moments I cherish the most.

Not the big stages.
Not the perfect performances.

Just a room full of friends, a guitar, a song, and everyone laughing.

And maybe that's one of the things
Glen always reminded us of without even trying.
To be present.
Feel it.
To sing the song.
And to laugh.

✨💫❤️💫✨
