Ru/West: Vol. 2 The Katya Markova Archetype. If the first volume of RuWest studied how Western style is skillfully woven into the Russian identity code, Volume 2 takes this intersection into a deeper, cinematic conflict through the strict language of styling. We explore how Western culture fuses with Russian reality on two levels simultaneously. It enters through the global commercial uniform—the three iconic Adidas stripes—and through the primal, ritualistic body art inspired by ancient indigenous tribes. Inside the wooden cinema sets of the Ladoga region, these elements collide with local textures: raw cotton, translucent organza, and the heavy beads of a wooden rosary. The styling relies entirely on graphic rhymes: Western sportswear frames a sacred grid on the skin. Her body art functions like a tribal defense. Here, bearing a cross is stripped of passive patience; it means to brand oneself with one’s own past and fate. There is a necessary intensity in this stance—a wild refusal to be assimilated by outer dogmas. Safe within her own identity, native to her own power. RU/WEST: BULATOVA Bulatova clashes global digital perception with genetic memory. For her, the veranda of an old wooden house serves as a personal assembly point. Her outfit acts as a deliberate cultural conflict. She forcefully grounds the American pop-code of Calvin Klein denim with local, naive details: plastic daisies and red beadwork. Within the Russian dacha space, this tricolor transforms into an Erik Bulatov canvas. By projecting the printed architecture onto the reality of the porch, Bulatova strips the imported silhouette of its autonomy—locking Western gloss firmly inside the rigid geometry of the place.
