New resource⚡️ Block it! Don’t Build It. Don’t Fill It. Don’t Fuel It. — A Mini-Toolkit for Interrupting the Abduction, Detention, and Deportation Machine

As ICE, Customs & Border Patrol, and federal enforcement violence continues to intensify and expand across the United States, people everywhere are mobilizing to protect migrant friends, family, co-workers and neighbors. 💪

📣The administration cannot successfully execute their cruel anti-migrant agenda without our consent, labor, money, permits, transportation infrastructure, technology, and complicity!

In cities across the country, people are coming together, getting creative, and doing what they can to slow down and disrupt the government’s kidnapping, detention, and deportation machine.

Together with our partners at the @instabaji, Community Justice Exchange, @detentionwatch, and more, IC gathered information on strategies and tactics communities are deploying to stop construction of new detention capacity, slow and interrupt the kidnapping of migrants, challenge collusion and complicity with deportations, and stop the flow of funds, resources, data and legitimacy to the machine. We’ve put this all together into a mini-toolkit, available online on our website.

Block It! is an invitation to join efforts already in motion in your community and across the country to protect our families, neighbors, and community members, to expand and step up existing efforts — and, if there is a gap in your area, to start your own and to take action wherever and however you can!

Check it out via our Linktree or at: ➡️interruptingcriminalization.org/block-it

🎨We also invited movement artist and migrant justice organizer @itsmonicatrinidad to create this beautiful artwork that you can use in your organizing efforts and to invite people to action! It is available in:

📱downloadable poster and social media formats
📜in our online shop, if you want a print
🖌️fillable formats you can use to promote your own call to action or event!

We hope you will find info, inspiration, and materials you can use! Artwork by Monica Trinidad, featuring illustrated tan-colored text on a purple background: "Block It! Don't Build It. Don't Fill It. Don't Fuel It. How are YOU disrupting the ICE kidnapping, detention, & deportation machine?" Three rows of images in orange, tan, and black depict a protest in front of a construction vehicle, transport vans and three Avelo Airlines planes, and hands holding and ripping apart money and a paper with "Palantir" on it. by @interruptcrim

We are still struggling to find words to mark the passing of IC's beloved collaborator, comrade, costruggler, cohort member, colleague, & friend, Curtis Renee.

Curtis (they/them) modeled & practiced abolitionist presents & futures through the Allied Media Conference & Detroit Safety Team, resisted criminalization & cultivated communities of care through Black Lives Matter Detroit, supported Black migrant communities, embodied Black trans & queer liberation everywhere, & lit up every space—with their smile, infectious laughter, strategic & practical organizing brilliance, deep commitment to Black liberation & to safer, resourced, connected, & well-fed communities, & most of all, with their grounded, welcoming, caring, & creative presence.

Curtis generously shared their brilliance on many occasions with One Million Experiments, & co-founded SpokesCouncil Detroit with IC co-founder Andrea J. Ritchie & Allied Media Projects Director Toni Moceri, weaving & growing ecosystems of community defense & mutual aid deeply rooted in their beloved community. As a member of IC's extended community, they collaborated, supported, & skill-shared with organizers across the country who are forever changed & inspired by having shared space & struggled alongside them.

The imprint Curtis left on the world extends far beyond our collective knowing, & their light will continue to be reflected by the countless lives they touched. As IC co-founder Mariame Kaba put it, “you can tell how a person lived by how people loved them & how people grieve them.”

IC is committed to lifting up, honoring, & celebrating Curtis' life & legacy, & to continuing to fight to transform the conditions that led to yet another loss of a Black trans life far too soon.

In the coming weeks we will share resources, wisdom, & insights from Curtis, as well as details for the Oct. 11th memorial, which will be livestreamed.

In the meantime, if you've been touched by Curtis' work or by those of us shaped by it, we invite you to share remembrances & to support their family & community by contributing to the memorial & legacy fund: linktr.ee/honoring.curtis.renee text: In loving memory of Photo: a smiling black person text: IC joins in grieving the immeasurable loss of our beloved costruggler, collaborator, and community member Curtis Renee by @interruptcrim

Sun-Seeker MKE is a Black Trans-led abolitionist collective in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with a mission to, “collectively empower and sharpen the skills of Black people, trans folks, and abolitionist organizers in Milwaukee.” They want to, “reimagine the material and cultural infrastructures of safety and care without the cops, violence, or punishment.” They do this by building the capacities of organizers and working with their communities and connections to create systems of care that will provide support in moments of crisis and interpersonal violence — by teaching communities how to radically care for each other.

The collective supports crisis response, mutual aid efforts, distributes harm reduction materials, and hosts educational workshops — like community defense courses and stop-the-bleed workshops — as well as social events — like sharing lamb shanks and salad at their local farm partner — in order build to solidarity and safety between marginalized circles.

One of their recent experiments was an “Abolitionist Science Fair,” an interactive, experimental space led by their Y.E.L.L. (Youth Empowered for Leadership and Liberation) fellows that engaged community members to think about the many experiments and tactics it will take to create a Milwaukee free of punishment, incarceration, and police violence. The fellows developed an issue-based campaign on youth mass incarceration and prison alternatives, studying how youth incarceration affects the community, pinpointing stakeholders, and cultivating allies. The science fair was one example of the ways in which Sun-Seeker used the lens of experiments to share skills that would help the young organizers in their campaigns. Stations at the fair included Pod Mapping with Yo’ People, Stop the Bleed, the 5-Ds of De-escalation, and Needs Assessment. (You can view the Science Fair Passport Booklet at bit.ly/aboscifair.)

"A lot of dreaming keeps Black people safe," co-founder Yante Turner said, "because we’ve had to re-imagine and imagine systems that have not cared for us to be different.”

From our project @millionexperiments:

Do you see any “overground railroads” where you are? What systems, networks, and relationships come together around you to bring people closer to liberation? The different pieces of your railroad may be directly connected, or not.

Use this space to map what you see now or the dreams you can envision for the future. You can focus on one thing, or zoom out to showcase a multitude of needs met. Your overground railroad doesn’t have to look like a map!

Widely recognized as the single largest voter registration project in United States history, the Mississippi Summer Project took place from June 14 to August 20, 1964 — supporting and supported by 41 Freedom Schools that spanned the state of Mississippi and planted new seeds of radical education in the Deep South.

In his book “The Freedom Schools,” Jon Hale writes that, “A history of the Freedom Schools reveals that young people still in middle and high school were on the front lines of the civil rights movement, and in many instances it was the young people—not the rebellious college students or established NAACP card-carrying members—who inspired local movements in their own community. A study of the Freedom Schools illustrates how central education was to the local grassroots civil rights movement.”

Participant and historian Howard Zinn once said, "Education can, and should, be dangerous.” As we delve into the history and legacy of freedom schools this fall, we'll explore both the dangers that Mississippi Freedom Summer activists and students faced as well as the threat the project promised to racist regimes behind the "Cotton Curtain."
