#BlackAuthorsMatter 🌍✊🏾New Book Release💫 The IE Book was written by our founder @greengirlleah with essays and tips from members of the first IE council + activists from around the world. Pre-order linked in bio 🧚🏽✨

Black history is environmental history and this book highlights the work of the environmental justice movement and Black feminist theorists who laid the groundwork for intersectional theory.

This book is a primer on all things intersectional environmentalism and is a call to action/reminder that we can’t save the planet without uplifting the voices of its people, especially those most often unheard.

Why are pre-orders important? With only 8 days left to pre-order, pre-orders make a world of difference in the world of publishing which is a white + male dominated industry.

Pre-orders help show the publishing world that they should invest in a project, continue to amplify and invest in Black + BIPOC authors, and also encourages the publisher to put more resources behind the promotion of the book.

Black female authors are some of the least represented in the industry and even less so in the world of environmental writing. 📕

The Intersectional Environmentalist: How to dismantle systems of oppression to protect people + planet was written by first time author Leah Thomas who started writing the book at 25 years old while also founding the IE platform, which now has over 400,000 community members (each of you!)

With this project, she hopes to show other young Black women that their writing projects are possible. ✨

We want the world of publishing to hear the voices of the IE community loud and clear.

From Feb 28th to March 8th (launch day), we’ll be sharing 8 days of content about the book to celebrate the accomplishment of our founding story + amplifying Black authors.

On reciprocity, love and looking to nature to find balance. I listened to a wonderful conversation between @robinwallkimmerer and @willowonearth that reminded me the importance of reciprocity Dr. Kimmerer writes so beautifully about in her work

What does it mean to belong to a place, to a people, or to yourself?

@joyharjoforreal work invites us to notice not just what we carry from our ancestors, but also what becomes possible when we begin remembering the land, the language, and the people who shaped us.

These journaling prompts are an invitation to sit with memory, home, and belonging. To ask where belonging has felt like something you had to earn, and where you might be ready to return to yourself.

Which prompt did you need to hear today?

when someone tells you they’re anxious about the future of our planet, they might not need you to convince them everything is going to be okay.

sometimes they just need to know they don’t have to carry that fear alone. here are some ways to start the conversation in honor of #climateweek 2026

thank you @intersectionalenvironmentalist @greengirlleah for making these conversations accessible and possible with us 💛

when you want to understand what’s actually behind their anxiety

when you don’t know whether they want support or action

when you want to help them reconnect with something that makes them feel grounded

when the problem feels too big for one person to carry

when you don’t have an answer or don’t know what to say, but you don’t want them to feel alone

thank you @intersectionalenvironmentalist and @greengirlleah for making these conversations possible during climate week and always. head to their website for more ways to take action 💛 by @intersectionalenvironmentalist

The climate movement isn’t going anywhere, and I’ll be here continuing this work. At the same time, I’d love to see kids simply get to be kids, while adults take on more of the responsibility for activism.

Mutual aid in action: what happens when a community shows up for each other. St. Louis, Mo based filmmaker @camicruzthomas @314oasis and a group of friends filled a pick up truck with aid when the city seemed to forget about north city St. Louis after a tornado hit, while richer areas were already beginning to rebuild. While demanding the funds due to the city to be equally distributed, they decided to take action to make sure north city knew they weren’t forgotten. taken in St Louis Missouri by @intersectionalenvironmentalist

What can Black relationships with land teach us about building otherwise?

During his residency at Ace Hotel Brooklyn, multimedia artist and educator @CurryHackett collaborated with @j.t.roane and @nolabeljona of the Rutgers University Black Ecologies Lab to explore Black kinship with land, ecological memory and new possibilities for inhabiting the built environment.

Together, they transformed an Ace suite into a site for research, pause and exchange, bringing books from their personal libraries into the space, conducting interviews with Black land stewards and Black studies scholars, gathering footage, making drawings and assembling collages.

The resulting exhibition, It Can Happen… Still Time to Try, brings these materials together as a multimedia curriculum imagining how we might mend our relationship with land.

Inspired in part by June Jordan’s writing on land reform, the exhibition considers Black dwelling not only as a response to the environments we inherit, but as a practice of imagining and constructing new ones.
