prepare, don’t panic: what el niño means for our communities ↓

el niño isn’t new, but these climate patterns are happening on an already warming planet, creating added challenges for communities, ecosystems, and food systems.

control what you can.

1. get educated. understand el niño, your local climate risks, and emergency preparedness. follow reliable weather updates and learn how changing conditions could affect your access to food, water, and essential resources.

2. get connected with your community. follow pages like @black.sustainability to stay in the know. build relationships with neighbors, share skills, exchange seeds, identify local food resources, and check on those who may need support.

3. learn your body. understand your nutritional needs, hydration, and energy levels. prioritize movement, rest, and healthy habits. if you practice fasting, do so safely and consider your health needs. it’s good & smart to be in-tune with your body.

4. save your water. store clean drinking water before an emergency. aim for at least one gallon per person per day for three days, with more needed in hot climates or for certain health needs and pets.

5. save your seeds and grow food. preserve crop diversity and culturally significant foods. start growing crops suited to your climate and learn to save seeds from appropriate varieties before you need these skills.
black communities can face disproportionate risks when extreme weather intersects with inequalities in food access, infrastructure, healthcare, and emergency resources.

preparedness starts before disaster strikes. build knowledge, strengthen community, and invest in the resources that help us care for ourselves and one another.

as we prepare for the possibility of a strong el niño and the climate disruptions that can come with it, one of the most powerful things we can do is learn how to feed ourselves.

🌱 save your seeds don’t throw away seeds from the foods you eat. learn which seeds can be saved, dried, stored, and replanted. saving seeds helps preserve biodiversity, protect culturally important crops, and gives communities more control over their food.

🌱 learn to grow start small. grow herbs, greens, peppers, tomatoes, beans, or whatever grows well where you live. you do not need acres of land to begin building food-growing skills.

🌱 know your food learn where your food comes from, what grows in your region, what is in season, and how to preserve what you harvest. food knowledge is survival knowledge.

🌱 share what you know teach your children. teach your neighbors. swap seeds. share seedlings. exchange growing tips. build community gardens. the goal is not individual survival. it is collective resilience. tap into organizations like @black.sustainability !

🌱 build your seed library keep seeds from successful plants and label them with the crop, variety, and year saved. over time, you can build a collection adapted to your local environment.

i actually put my album release rollout on hold because i believe this work matters right now.

as the singing scientist, i have a responsibility to use my voice beyond the stage.

i want to help communities understand the science, prepare for climate disruption, reconnect with the land, and remember that knowing how to feed yourself is a form of power.

we cannot wait until the shelves are empty to start asking, “how do i grow food?”

start learning now. start saving seeds now. start growing something now.

Truly a dream come true to be part of the Youth Climate Gala during New York Climate Week ✨ Here’s a question I would like to leave with y’all from my speech ~

The gala was so magical, I had the honor of meeting and hearing from some of my fav authors @robinwallkimmerer and @doctora_nature and got to sit with @juma_xipaia the team behind @yanunifilm 💗 what a privilege to be surrounded by the people who inspire you and the incredible women leading this movement!!!

I also got to see so so so many friends & colleagues ~ we’ve truly grown up together over these past 10 years in the climate movement and I’m always in awe of the beautiful work everyone is doing in their communities.

What are we doing with our lives? 😖

We’ve become so accustomed to busy, stressful lives… but for what?

We’re constantly working, building, consuming, planning for the future .. but what happens when the future we’re building towards isn’t protected?

The climate is changing.. We’re already experiencing more extreme weather, and somehow we’ve become so accustomed to it that we just carry on???

I remember watching films like 2012 and thinking, surely this could never happen… yet, here we are.

How have we become so disconnected from the planet we live on that we’ve convinced ourselves this is the only way to live? Because I don’t want this to be my life.

We need more funding for environmental research 🔬
We need to protect and restore nature 🍃
We need more green spaces 🌳
We need to protect our oceans and biodiversity 🌊

But perhaps, before any of that, we need to reconnect with nature

Because if we don’t see the value in what we’re protecting, how can we expect to protect it?

But surely, this isn’t what life is about
