November 2026:
Sorry I had to move to Alaska!

The weather in Oakland is perfect right now. The food is from every part of the world and delicious. I have wonderful people here. I’m working for the best company I’ve ever worked for.

And.

And. The antsy-ness has been building for a while.

So I applied for a dream job contract and I got it. Flight nursing in Alaska. Will I love it? Will I hate it? Probably both on different days! It’s not a permanent job. I won’t go all McCandles on y’all.

But I think you should meet your heroes. Which includes the versions of yourself you dream of being. by @intrepidsalamander

It’s the overwhelmingly loud party. It’s the quiet dawn after 90% of people left. It’s the bathroom graffiti. It’s the jaw dropping art. It’s the mud. It’s doing something important and being part of “the sauce.” It’s growing some relationships deeper. It’s making new ones. It’s just 16 days but the arc of emotions and seasons is impossible to capture. by @intrepidsalamander

Biking the Dalton Highway: 500 miles from the Arctic Ocean to Fairbanks, Alaska is a hard thing. I went four years ago, in July. I got snow, forest fires, rain and peanut butter mud. And also musk ox, beautiful flowers, endless tundra, 24hr sun, campsites under the oil pipeline.

Sometimes doing hard things leads us to beautiful places. And sometimes doing hard things reminds that we can do hard things.

I’m not doing extremely hard athletic things at the moment, but hot damn, I’m going through a chapter of hard.

Sometimes the beautiful hard things are your touchstones for the less beautiful hard things.

Earlier this year, ultra runner Rachel Entrekin, after crushing a course record, talked about “Do you like who you are when things get hard?”

And these days, I’m thinking about that a lot. by @intrepidsalamander

Day 6 of my Grand Canyon trip.
The night before I’d gotten into camp after dark. And I woke up in the dark. 9.3 miles behind schedule!

I’m loving every quiet moment but it’s time to crush some miles!

And hot damn it felt sooo good. I didn’t know if I was still fit enough for a 20+ mile day.

I would 100% do this section again. But slower 🤣 by @intrepidsalamander

Alpenglow is caused by sunlight reflected or diffracted by atmospheric particles, and we usually talk about it in the alpine, the pinks reflected on snowy peaks.

But in the Grand Canyon, there were a few stunning minutes where the reds became redder, the oranges deepened, and the canyon glow was pure magic. by @intrepidsalamander

75 mile canyon is a small part of the Escalante route in the Grand Canyon.
I didn’t really know what to expect of it, and its magic blew me away. I wanted to spend weeks there.

There is a science of awe. It’s often natural places for me, but is also often felt in art, music, collective movement, kindness or courage. It’s everyday wonder. It doesn’t fix everything wrong in the world and isn’t meant to soothe away very real tragedies. But it is important. It’s a place to ground or center ourselves. It allows for deeper grief and anger because it provides us ballast.

The light dancing on canyon walls can be a touch stone on hard days. by @intrepidsalamander

REDEMPTION ROUTE.
A redemption route is a trip where Plan A didn’t work out. You had to turn around, bail out a different way, skip some place you wanted to go.

It’s a trip that was successful in that you made it out safe, you learned new things, you spent time in beautiful places…. But is a little unsatisfying in that it didn’t go quite as planned.

Most people plan trips that are well well within their abilities and don’t have lists of redemption routes.

I, on the other hand, have many many redemption routes. I like planning a challenge. I’m always well within my ability to get home safely but Plan A often requires very few things to go wrong (being sick, bad weather, gear failures).

Making it through Papago Wall and Papago Slide was SUPER SATISFYING. I had learned many good lessons and moving through the route felt amazing.

Papago Slide does change frequently, as it, you know, slides, so if someone in the future sees this— ask the rangers what’s up with it. Definitely only go up or down one at a time because the rock fall risk is real. And theirs never any shame in butt scooting.

Any redemption routes in your 2026 plans? by @intrepidsalamander

Day 5 in the Grand Canyon, feeling a little beat to pieces but also hitting my stride and in love with this place.

After a very windy and kinda stressful night, I packed up camp in the dark in a record 17 minutes, had a breakfast of champions of peanut butter M&M’s and was cruising along in the long dawn of the canyon.

The Escalante route is wild and incredible. I saw no one the entire day. If I was to do it again, I’d take three days just for this section to explore the canyons and spend more time just listening to the sound of water in the desert.

11 miles 2500ft gain/loss.
