From the beginning, Anu and I have wanted to build our dream of a healthcare world, together, right here in this corner of it. What we need as clinicians is moral space, and each other. I’ll admit — there’s no checkbox, no certificate, waiting at the end of this journey. But there’s something that escapes all of that: knowing yourself again. This fall , starting Sept 14. Our three public drops will meet at Tuesday at noon PST, Tuesday at 7pm PST, and Wednesday at 4pm PST . If there is something left in your soul unsaid, we hope you’ll join us. by @introspectivespaces

Creativity is resistance, creativity is rest ❤️

A recap of the Artists Way Pinning Ceremony in LA celebrating the participants who completed the Spring chapter of the Artists Way creativity program!

The room was not only filled with healthcare workers representing almost every part of the workforce, but also echoed the same sentiment - that we need each other to survive in this complex ecosystem and that our creative practices give space to create out of our experiences.

The program has helped so many healthcare workers blossom into artists, and here's the proof! - from writers to vocalists to poets, some of whom have self-published their work this year! to crafters & healthcare parents finding ways to incorporate simple creative practices with their little ones. That is the magic of this program i.e the activation energy to just begin, and a supportive community that bears witness to the process ✨

Check out @introspectivespaces and their newest offerings with a rebrand, but serving the same purpose 🙏🏽 by @introspectivespaces

We have news. 💛

Five years ago, Anu and I started Introspective Spaces with a simple and somewhat audacious belief: that healthcare workers heal one another in contemplative community and that tending to that inner landscape isn’t indulgent — it is necessary.

A few years into that journey, we started with a book club. Twelve weeks, a handful of clinicians, Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way as our guide. Two hundred participants later, we know a lot more.

What we’ve built together, with all of you, has taken on a life of its own. Starting this fall, we will be renaming The Artist’s Way for Healthcare Workers to Healing Together: A Creative Community for Clinicians.

Same community. Same intention. A name that more honestly reflects what actually happens when healthcare workers gather to tend to their creative lives together.

If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to join us, fall registration is now open! Cohort begins September 14th!

Thank you for being part of this community — whether you’ve been with us since the beginning, joined a cohort somewhere along the way, or have been quietly following from a distance wondering if now is the time.
It might be.

Let us know how you’re tending to your creative self this summer. We’d love to hear from you! With gratitude,
Laura & Anu by @introspectivespaces

What happens when we create and hold space for our full humanity in medicine? This is the beautiful, quietly revolutionary work Dr Anu Gorukanti and Laura Holford RN are doing at Introspective Spaces @introspectivespaces

We talked about contemplative practice, community care, moral distress, the Artist’s Way for healthcare workers, and why healthcare is comfortable saying “innovation” but terrified of saying “creativity.”

(Spoiler: innovation without creativity is just a circle.)

New episode of The Other Human in the Room is out now. Listen & subscribe in your fave podcast platform❤️🎙️❤️

Growing up, I always had leisurely summers. In between summer camps and sports, there was plenty of time to laze around - and, dare I say it, to be bored (any Midwest folks feel me on those humid summers??)

As I progressed through my training in college, medical school, and residency, life no longer had a seasonal cadence. And of course, once we begin a job in healthcare, the only breaks we have are often the ones we fight for.

After years of moving at a harried pace, slowing down can feel very strange. I often find myself judging myself - is this lazy? Am I wasting my time? How can I slow down when there is so much suffering in the world?  Slowing down to be creative, for no purpose other than to enjoy art?  Nearly unthinkable.

The struggle to slow down, especially when we feel the constant pull to be productive or to fight for the things we believe in, is very real. The book “Practicing Liberation,” an anthology of strategies for collective healing, reminds us why this act of slowing down is essential, especially in activism or care-oriented spaces. They write, “to slow down invites spaciousness not only for critical self-reflection, but also for resting, contemplating, stillnesss, healing, playing, awe and connecting.”

This Slow Summer series is inspired by our own team commitment to try to slow down this summer. The offerings below provide a variety of ways to slow down on your own time. Whether it’s through an artist date, a contemplative practice or our community book club, creativity and community can nourish the soul. As our team at IS takes time to slow down this summer, we hope you’ll join us.

Check out the courses in our link in bio or subscribe to read the full newsletter narrative!

What is one way you are planning to slow down this summer? We’d love to hear from you by @introspectivespaces
