Obedience might look neat in the moment—but resilience lasts a lifetime.

We’ve found on the trail (and in life) that kids don’t always need someone telling them “yes” or “no.” What they need is space to stumble, to get back up, and to discover their own strength.

While obedience teaches compliance, resilience teaches courage. We aren’t trying to raise rule-followers, but to raise a future generation of humans capable of weathering storms, pushing through challenges they willingly took on, and carving their own lives with confidence.

So, how exactly can we all try to incorporate teaching resilience to our children in our everyday lives?

Say:
-“It’s okay to try and fail.”
-“You can do hard things.”
-“You are capable of figuring it out.”

Do:
-Normalize struggle. Let your kids know it’s okay to fall short, to cry, to feel frustrated. Struggle isn’t failure—it’s growth.
-Model bounce-back. When plans fall apart (missed trains, rainy days, poor food choices), show them how to adapt with humor instead of anger.
-Give choices. Resilience grows when kids feel a sense of control. Even small choices—like which trail snack to carry—teach independence.

Don’t:
-Celebrate only results and not effort. The summit is great, but the courage it took to keep climbing is where the real growth lives.
-Immediately come to the rescue. Sometimes the kindest thing we can do is not swoop in. Let them wrestle with the puzzle, the hike, the conflict—then watch their pride when they figure it out “alllll by myself”.

Which do you think matters more: raising obedience or resilience? Let’s talk about it 👇 taken in Austria by @intwothesunset

We HAVE to stop splitting our lives into the before and the after. When we had kids, there was all this negativity around how our lives would change. “Oop can’t go on airplanes anymore!” Or “just you wait… it’s only downhill from here!”

And so, we behaved like children being told what they could not do. They said we could not travel with our kids? Well, we were absolutely determined that we COULD.

Now, we can confidentially say that our lives did indeed change. And we’re loving every second of it!

BUCKETLIST WITH KIDS:

Common misconception #1: you have to take a pause in things you want to do and see because you have children.
Common misconception #2: Your kids are not going to enjoy doing these things with you.
Common misconception #3: Your kids are going to ruin these experiences for you.

Little secret #1: We have added more things than ever to our bucket list BECAUSE of our kids, and they love it! And if your kids show just as much excitement to experience new things, we call that a WIN.

Throw your hands up in the comments if you agree!

The key to happiness! 👇

(Or so we were taught to believe)

Step 1 work hard in school
Step 2 get into a good college
Step 3 get a good job
Step 4 marry someone who did all these things
Step 5 have a family and be happy!

We believed we had to check off all those steps in order and THEN we would find happiness.

But thinking back on our lives, it wasn’t accomplishing each step that made us truly happy, it was everything in between.

It wasn’t the degrees and the graduations that made us happy, it was our friends and all the relationships we made.

It wasn’t actually becoming doctors that made us feel accomplished, it was learning to be competent and compassionate physicians.

It wasn’t actually the day we got married that was the most magical time in our lives, it was getting to grow up with the love our life.

And having our kids and our family isn’t going to be just another check mark towards happiness.

It’s all the little things we do everyday that we are going to look back on fondly. It will the Friday popcorn movie nights, putting up the Halloween decorations every year, and taking them to all their classes celebrating little goals.

Yes we’ve worked hard and achieved a lot of goals…but no…they’re not what’s given us happiness in the end, it’s the journey not the destination that matters. by @intwothesunset

BOYS WILL BE BOYS.

We’ve heard it time and time again. Laugh it all off because of the little expectations we have of them as boys. But roar of the high expectations we have of them as men.

Yes boys will be boys.

That while they are to definition of a hurricane, creating a wake in their path as they jump off stairs, couches, walls and more; they are also creatures with gentle hearts that fully wear them on their sleeves for everyone to see.
But they need to learn that feelings matter and reactions are important. That respect has to be mutual and boundaries are key. And that “boy behavior” is not an excuse to hurt someone, dismiss their feelings, or avoid accountability.

So let boys be boys.

Not our definition of what boys SHOULD be. But what they could be. Because “boys will be boys” doesn’t mean “boys don’t have to know better”.

Then they can turn into the men that we NEED them to be.

WHEN WE’RE EIGHTY YEARS OLD….

And we close our eyes, I know this is what we will see.

This era of cliches. Where every known saying that we’d roll our eyes at about parenthood, suddenly makes sense. Yes, the days are long but the years are indeed short. Yes, these are the “good old days” and if we’ll blink, we’ll miss it.

Because we are most definitely in AWE. Awe of how these tiny humans grow into their own persons everyday.

This era where magic is alive and well. They feel magic in the very essence of everything they do, see, and experience. And we do everything in our power to make them feel it, in themselves, every day.

So when I look back to myself with the newborn or the toddler, in the trenches, asking myself “when does it EVER get easier?”, I just want to give her a hug.

And let her know… there is so much JOY coming her way. by @intwothesunset

The ones who say “get in loser! We’re going on a roadtrip!” are the friends you need to keep.

The friends who will know you need an escape before you even say it.

Or wake up before sunrise just to watch the world wake up with you.

The ones who will keep walking when your legs are tired—and laugh with you when you question your life choices.

The friends who make ordinary moments feel like memories you’ll talk about for years. Because friendship isn’t just about who shows up for the celebrations. It’s about who shows up for the hard climbs, the wrong turns, and the quiet moments in between.

Years from now, you won’t remember every night at the bar.
But you’ll remember who stood beside you at the top of the summit.

Moms, we have GOT to stop overthinking it…

I am the first to admit that my mom guilt stops me from doing most things. Nails? I don’t have those 2 hours to spend. Haircut? Let’s push that back again. Doctor’s appointment? Don’t even get me started.

But sometimes we have to just rip the bandaid off and TAKE. THAT. TRIP.

Even if everyone’s busy.
Even if coordinating schedules feels impossible.
Even if there’s work, practices, school pickups, laundry and a hundred other reasons why this probably isn’t the “perfect” weekend to leave.

Because the truth is, there probably won’t ever be a perfect weekend…and between being a mom, a wife, a professional, a chauffeur, a planner and the person who somehow knows where everyone’s shoes are…there’s still you.

And “girls trips “ are a chance to remember HER.

To have conversations that actually get finished.
To eat a meal without cutting someone else’s food first.
To stay up way too late talking about absolutely nothing and somehow everything and most importantly, to maintain the friendships that can so easily get pushed to the bottom of the list when life gets busy.

Being a great mom means taking a second to remember that you’re YOU in the first place. And that no one else can mom like you, because no one else IS like you.

So… here’s ME (Tanvi). Taking a second to show you ME in the wild. taken in Yosemite National Park by @intwothesunset

Ladies, if he asks if you want to grab a cup of coffee…

Make sure you ask WHERE first!

Being together for this long has taught me that “let’s grab coffee” is a very loose term.

Sometimes it means finding a cute little café in some exotic corner of the world.

Sometimes it means a warm cup of coffee at the top of a mountain after a long hike.

And sometimes it means…

“We’ll grab coffee AFTER a workout.”

So now when he asks if I want coffee, my first question is:

“Am I bringing my gym bag and a change of clothes?” taken in Dolomites, Italy by @intwothesunset

SCREEN TIME IS NOT THE BIGGEST THREAT.

It’s the parent who wants you worry about what may be around the corner.

Because apparently every stage of childhood comes with a warning:

“Just you wait until they’re 2…”

“Just you wait until they’re 5…”

“Just you wait until they’re teenagers…”

But what if we stopped using “just you wait” as a threat and started using it as a promise?

Our kids are 6 and 8, and MAN, life keeps getting better as they age. So we’re going to step back and reflect, and give you OUR OWN list of “just you waits”.

JUST YOU WAIT until they teach their younger sibling something you taught them years ago, and you realize your voice lives in their voice now.

JUST YOU WAIT until they come home excited to tell you about something you weren’t there to see—and you realize their world is slowly becoming bigger than yours.

JUST YOU WAIT until they start making their own little traditions, and you realize the childhood you created is becoming part of the childhood they remember.

JUST YOU WAIT until they find an old picture of themselves and say, “I was so little!” while you silently think, You were. And somehow, you still are.

JUST YOU WAIT until the little legs that once needed to be carried are the ones racing ahead of you on the trail.

JUST YOU WAIT until they start asking, ‘Where are we going next?’ instead of ‘When are we going home?’”

JUST YOU WAIT until they remember that tiny gelato shop, that random street, or that sunset you thought they’d forget.”

JUST YOU WAIT until they say hi to the locals in their own language.

JUST YOU WAIT until they beg you for their first camera, so they can start taking pictures of all their adventures.

JUST YOU WAIT until they start making their OWN bucketlist (our 8 year olds greatest dream is to see the Northern Lights 😭)

JUST YOU WAIT until they suddenly have a “favorite place in the world” and you can talk about how you went there.

JUST YOU WAIT until the trips you once worried they wouldn’t remember become the stories they tell about their childhood.

JUST. YOU. WAIT. Because it gets REALLY, REALLY, good. taken in Los Angeles, California by @intwothesunset

📍📍Location: We showed our kids Luca…

and then took them to THIS town in Croatia! 👇👇

Cavtat, Croatia might be the closest we’ve ever come to accidentally walking into sea monsters.

Pastel buildings, terracotta rooftops, tiny boats bobbing in ridiculously blue water, narrow stone streets and mountains rising behind the harbor. We all felt like we jumped into the movie and kept waiting for Luca and Alberto to come flying around the corner on a Vespa.

Despite being just down the coast from Dubrovnik, Cavtat feels WAY more relaxed. It’s small enough that you can explore most of it in a day, which makes it an easy escape from the crowds of Dubrovnik.

HOW TO GET THERE:
From Dubrovnik, take Bus #10 to Cavtat. The buses run about every 30 minutes, and the ride is roughly 30–40 minutes. Look into buying the city pass for bus fair to be included. (Check out our other post about Dubrovnik for more info about the pass)

BUT, you could also…go by boat! Boats connect Dubrovnik and Cavtat, and arriving from the water is easily the most “Luca” way to do it. Boats generally operate during the warmer tourist season and you have to book ahead.

Finally, you can drive there but parking is very limited and not recommended if you can avoid it.

Now if you want even MORE details, comment CAVTAT, and we’ll send you a DM!

Because while Dubrovnik gets all the attention, Cavtat captured our HEART! taken in Cavtat, Croatia by @intwothesunset
