POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
PANGOLINS ARE BEING TRAFFICKED. BUT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES ENOUGH?

In May 2026, two men were sentenced to 8 yearsโ€™ direct imprisonment each after being convicted of trafficking a live Temminckโ€™s pangolin in South Africa.

The pangolin they were caught with was a pregnant female. She was rescued in a severely compromised condition but tragically died just five days later, along with her unborn pup.

This is what wildlife trafficking really looks like.

The @johannesburgwildlifevet has become a lifeline for rescued pangolins, treating animals confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade and giving them a chance to return to the wild.

Under NEMBA (South Africaโ€™s National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act): wildlife offences can carry penalties of up to 10 years in prison and/or a R10 million fine.

But hereโ€™s the question: Is it enough?

When pangolins remain one of the most trafficked mammals on Earth, and organised wildlife crime continues to profit from their suffering, are our penalties strong enough to actually deter the trade?

What do you thinkโ€ฆ. are the penalties for pangolin trafficking strong enough?

The world needs some good news! Rhino poaching in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, South Africa:

๐Ÿฆ 2023: 307 rhino poached
๐Ÿฆ 2024: 199 rhino
๐Ÿฆ 2025: 63 rhino
๐Ÿฆ 2026: already showing encouraging signs of dropping even further.

Thatโ€™s an 80% reduction in just two years. ๐Ÿ™Œ

The timing of the dramatic decline closely follows the reserveโ€™s major dehorning operations and itโ€™s not just Hluhluwe-iMfolozi.

A recent study across 11 Greater Kruger reserves found that dehorning was associated with a 78% reduction in poaching risk. Dehorned rhinos had an estimated 0.6% annual risk of being poached, compared with 13% for horned rhinos.

Dehorning isnโ€™t perfect. It isnโ€™t without controversy. But when the alternative is a dead rhino, the question has to be:

Would you rather see a rhino without a horn, or no rhino at all? โค๏ธ ๐Ÿฆ

Happy African wild dog day!!

Invicta are celebrating one of Africaโ€™s most remarkable and endangered predators. Theyโ€™re intelligent, social and fiercely devoted to their pack.

So why do conservationists collar and track them?

Tracking collars allow teams to follow packs and individuals closely. This helps them understand their movements, behaviour, pack dynamics, dispersal and population health. This information is vital for making informed conservation decisions and protecting the species long-term.

But tracking can also mean saving a life.

If a Wild Dog is caught in a snare, becomes injured or sick, leaves a protected area, or moves towards an area of potential human-wildlife conflict, its location can be detected and conservation teams can respond much more quickly. Some anti-snare collars are even designed to prevent a snared animal from choking, while sending an emergency signal if the animal remains stationary for an unusual length of time.

Young orphaned rhinos are often paired with sheep or goats during rehabilitation because, in the wild, calves stay close to their mothers for the first few years of life. After losing that bond through poaching or other circumstances, they can become stressed and anxious when left alone. A calm companion animal provides comfort, reduces stress and helps the rhinos feel more secure as they recover.

These unlikely friendships often become incredibly strong. Rhinos and their sheep companions can spend their days grazing, resting and sleeping side by side, and some orphaned calves become visibly distressed if separated, calling, pacing or searching until they are reunited. As the rhinos grow older and begin socialising with other rhinos, they gradually become less reliant on their sheep companions, helping prepare them for life back in the wild.

Some places have a soundtrack. Africaโ€™s is the unmistakable call of the African fish eagle ๐Ÿฆ… echoing across rivers, lakes and floodplains, a sound that instantly feels like home in the wild.

Without vultures, nature would lose one of its most important clean-up crews.

Most people see them as scavengers. In reality they are one of Africaโ€™s most important conservation heroes!

Vultures act as natureโ€™s clean-up crew, removing carcasses from the landscape before disease can spread. Their incredibly powerful digestive systems destroy harmful bacteria and pathogens, helping to keep ecosystems healthy for wildlife, livestock and people alike.

Vultures may not always receive the admiration they deserve, but without them our ecosystems would be far less healthy.

Sometimes the species we overlook are the ones working hardest to keep nature in balance.

How would you like to come and help contribute towards conservation?

This October Iโ€™m running a trip with @invicta_wf in South Africa where youโ€™ll get the chance to work with conservation monitors and help track endangered species.
Any profits from the trip will go directly towards conservation in the field, where it matters!

๐ŸŒ World Environment Day ๐ŸŒ

We may never stand in the heart of a rainforest, watch a whale cross the ocean, or see a wild herd move across an open plain.

Yet those places are part of our story.

The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat are connected to ecosystems we may never see and species we may never meet. Life on Earth is woven together in ways both visible and unseen.

Nature is not somewhere else. It is all around us, and within us.

This World Environment Day, letโ€™s remember that caring for the planet means caring for the whole web of life that sustains us.

๐ŸŒฑ Everything is connected. The Earth belongs to all of us, and its future is in all of our hands.

Have you ever witnessed how silent elephants are in the bush? They appear from nowhere and disappear in the blink of an eye with hardly any sound apart from a few snapping branches.

This video was taken by @sarahstribblingwildlifeart while in the field with @wildlife_act on a recent volunteer experience. They barely heard it as it walked right in front of their vehicle.

Do you have any stories of seeing Elephants in the wild?
