It’s been three weeks, and we’ve finally had time to reflect on the event we were fortunate enough to host in Youngstown.
•
Out heart is full, and we are busy planning the next industry event for 2027
•
We had 12 technicians come from across the country to learn the deep-dive technical knowledge from one of the techs who builds the machines at Slayer in WA. Dario and Kaileigh flew out to facilitate that training to give our Service Layer crew the knowledge they need to gain an expert advantage in the Slayer ecosystem. Dario and Kaileigh are legends in the coffee industry, and are incredible resources who shared their insights with us all.
•
At the end of training, we had a latte art throwdown open for the whole community to gather and celebrate the industry and the NE Ohio coffee scene. As an added bonus, we were able to raise $500 for @animalcharityofohio to assist the beautiful work they are doing for animals in our area.
•
We had tattoo artists, a tintype photographer, food truck, DJ, and local brews for charity. We got to see incredible pours from competitors using oat milk (yep, it was a challenge 😉) and about 200 people in and out throughout the night

Last week @invokecoffeetech hosted an official and in-depth two day @slayerespresso training for technicians, followed by an after party with a latte art throw down, flash tattoos, and unique tintype photography!

Many Service Layer technicians were able to join in the event, and Mauricio at @projectmambo.usa even won first place in the latte art competition.

Our City Coffee Roasters offers a standard espresso blend, as well as rotating lists of single origin espresso. You won’t find any batch brew coffee here, the focus is on espresso based drinks.

The entire space is curated with art and vintage furniture pieces from local artists and crafters, and the custom epoxy floors and countertops match the color palette. Every inch of this cafe was built with intention and care.

Juny had some questions for Matt @invokecoffeetech !

Q: What was the moment you realized, “Okay, this isn’t just a business idea anymore; this is really happening”?

A: “The reality set in when we finally signed the lease. Now it was literally make it or break it. Thankfully we had a well rehearsed business plan, and a clear and focused vision.”

Q: What’s something people assume about owning a business that is completely wrong?

A: “The overnight success is a lie. If you are successful, there are often years of sweat equity, trial and error, and countless unplanned work hours put in to make it work. People see your success and think, “That looks easy, anyone can do it,” but there is a lot of work that no one will ever notice.”

Q: If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice on Day One, what would it be?

A: “Consult with a pro. We wasted so much time and money buying equipment we thought was right for us, only to find out that we really needed something different. Over years, we got our setup fine tuned and exactly what we wanted, but a local equipment tech (which didn’t exist in our day) would have given us all the shortcuts.”

Spending quality time with these wonderful people is so much more important than the event itself.
•
It’s the people behind the coffee, not the gear or the next hype trend.
•
Had a touch of food poisoning this weekend that took me out of some of the good hangs, but I got to see so many of the people who have become great friends along the way.
•
2026 Goals:
- Connect more with those who lift us up
- Take more time to be grateful for how far I’ve developed as a person and as a business
- Be intentional, and build intentionality into interactions wherever possible.
- Take more pictures. Seriously, this is all I got. I need to get better about making the moments that matter live on.

A first in a series of several killer coffee shops in and around Alliance, OH. It is amazing to see so many great options in the area, all offering different and unique experiences

Groovy Beans is an experience that can’t be missed. With a delicious food menu, plenty of comfortable seating, and drinks crafted with @culturehousecoffeeco out of Youngstown, there is something here for everyone.
•
Featuring the new @lamarzocco.usa Linea Classic S, @mazzerusa grinders and Fetco brewers, and a space that is loaded with 70’s vibes and nostalgic decor in every corner. Yep, there is a VW bus mural on the main wall too.
•
